So my McAfree subscription has just run out on my Dell laptop and I need some virus protection.
    What about AVG and AntiVir?
Which am I better off getting, or is there any other alternatives?
    Thanks.

I use avast from Alwil software. It's free and great.

I use avast as well. AVG and anti-vir are the other two, only reason I gave up AVG is because it stop working during and update and I couldn' get it going again.

when I was 18 I ran a pc repair company. I did a test to see which AV product was the best. I set up PC's with Norton, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky and eTrust.

AVG was the only one which found all the viruses I infected the machines with. Norton missed 2, Mcafee missed three. I forget what the other results were. I still use AVG on my personal windows box, and I downloaded AVG anti-spyware last week also. Avg gets my vote.

Or you could switch to linux :P

I switched to Avast! a few months back after AVG broke one too many times and failed to detect a virus (That I suspected was there, and updated and scanned and scanned... *rants off-line*). I have not used AntiVir so I cannot comment.

I use AVG on my windows box. But AVAST comes with a lot of recommendations too.

You could always check this thread too.

I use AVG on my parents home PC, college requires us to use McAfee - even on my mac - but I don't pay for that so it's grand.
