Great to see the national independents Today FM and Newstalk getting the recognition they deserve again. Ray D'arcy the winner of best light entertainment award, f*ck the begrudgers, still top show on daytime radio in my opinion.

Not a mention of 2fm there which tells a hell of a lot.

Big up Phantom for being Music Station of the Year! :)

Dempsey and D'arcy, I have to echo the sentiment... why? They've done nothing in the past few years to deserve awards, its the same old crud every morning.... there must be a better breakfast shows on the ILR's around the country than Dempseys?

Are the PPI Awards just playing it safe with rewarding the strongest Independent Radio shows?

I think the listenership figures and awards for these shows speak for themselves really. Obviously looking at other posts on boards the vocal minority here seem to dislike them but everybody's entitled to their own opinion.

    7th Annual PPI Radio Awards

    Winners Announced

This evening Friday 19th October the cream of Irish radio descended on Dublin’s Burlington Hotel for the seventh annual PPI Radio Awards. Over 850 people were in attendance including 2FM’s Gerry Ryan, breakfast show hosts Colm and Jim Jim, Today FM’s Ray D’Arcy, Ian Dempsey and Ray Foley and Newstalk’s Sean Moncrief amongst others for what is considered the Oscars of the music industry calendar.

Dara O’Briain was on hand to officiate at the ceremony and in his imitable style kept the proceedings enjoyable and indeed funny. For the first time radio stations from all 32 counties were eligible to enter and these new stations make a welcome addition to a ceremony overloaded with talented people and programmes. With over 500 entries and over 1,000 hours of radio airplay to listen to, its no easy task picking the winners.

This year the Outstanding Achievement Award went to Des Whelan CEO of WLR. Over the past thirty years Des Whelan has been at the forefront in the independent radio sector. He is the driving force behind the highly successful WLR FM and also Ireland’s first regional radio station Beat 102-103.

Another change to this years’ awards was on the judging panel. Traditionally the 45 strong judging panel has been made up from print media, UK radio executives, TV personalities and the general public. However this year the awards committee decided that Irish Radio should be judged by Irish Radio, thus 35 of the 45 judges come from radio on the island of Ireland including RTE, BBC Radio Ulster, Today FM, Newstalk together with many of the local independent stations. New also in 2007 is online judging in 3 categories – New Irish Music, Sports Coverage and Short Features which were judged by a further 33 judges all actively involved in local and national radio.

I agree with you there. If awards went for listernership, where are Morning Ireland, Gerry Ryan and Ryan Tubridy? The next tier below them got awards. Actually, RTÉ's lack of awards is noteworthy. Not that many, all said, which can only be a good thing. Buck them up. 2FM should take special notes. Maybe it was too early for John Clarke's changes to be noted by the industry.

Its a good point on the vocal minority there. boards.ie posters are a very small minority in the scheme of things, but it is feedback for these radio stations to chew on. It makes a change from the "great song, Ray" txts that are prevalent out there.

Actually, as I see NI stations getting awards, I would break my hole laughing of Hugo Duncan got an award :D

News Programme Lunchtime with Eamon Keane Newstalk 106 -108

How the fvck did that happen?

On a postive note, while WLR/Beat are piss poor for a 42 year old male, Des Whelan fully deserves that gong for ploughing a furrow which has yielded soild success.

    Mike.
