Want to test drive a hydrogen fuel cell car for 3 months? Call GM.

GM has started lending hydrogen fuel cell cars to people for a three month period as part of a market test - to get user feedback. They are using a SUV type of body for the project which is rather dumb - (the "Chevrolet Equinox" whatever that is - why can't they use numbers to designate models in the American car industry?) because they could get better range and acceleration performance from a lighter body using this emerging technology.

Anyway, at least they are trying - because they know that the European and Japanese auto makers will have a huge cost advantage when this technology moves into volume production unless GM has a competing product to offer. The engineering is so simple with an electric car - no gearbox or internal combustion engine with all those moving parts. The electric motor has been around for a century and is a well developed technology capable of pulling an 18 car duplex train at over 500 km/h.
