If I was UPC I would be seriously angered by that discussion.
I have known about these receivers for a while now ,I have a Dreambox 500s myself but for legal purposes.
Surprisingly Matt Cooper and the girl seem to advocate piracy and unashamedly tout the cause of the boxes.
UPC are rolling out Nagra 2 on their new DVR's but I'm sure this unwanted publicity will force them into looking at stronger encryption.

guest even said "its a grey area" if you are found with anything like this plugged into a cable or satellite service in order to view/record programming which you are not paying a subscription for then, you can be prosecuted. section 11 broadcasting act 1990. ( max fine €24k and or 2 years prision)
but its gets much more expensive if interested parties take civil suit for breach of copy-right loads of laws and obsure
    legalities there..
thats not a grey area its very black indeed.
I also don't think ntl is €15 a month anywhere.

That girl who presents the technology section really hasnt a clue.
I get the feeling she just googles every topic she discusses before the show.
    She really hasnt a clue.
On a side note this item might drive up NTL's basic subscription base .
I presume they make most of their profit off the base package and not the Premium packages.

I think nearly everyone on here would agree that say getting FTV cards from UK etc is getting around rules but its a whole other business to break these rules and most don't because its nearly too much hassle compared to just paying subscription. In reality, theres so much free stuff out there on satellite and also on aerial.
Last Word should be sh*t**g themselves I think to have something that grey on the programme, bet they wouldn't mention sky if it was even possible....

It's on the radio again now... (repeat).

Matt was trying to be as diplomatic as possible, but I get the feeling he doesn’t have much time for NTL.

These boxes maybe illegal, but they are so common now – and the radio discussion is only going to encourage more to try and get their hands on them - especially since it was mentioned that NTL can’t detect them from base.

If it’s not addressed, I can see Sky pulling the premium channels from NTL. We know they have no issue with sacrificing revenue from cable companies (look at Virgin in the UK).

Just to be claer the device in question is not in itself illegal,
the use of the device to intercept a service which requires a subscription is illegal.

    Nothing grey at all.
Use of ANYTHING to get pay TV you didn't pay for illegal.

Use of box for your own private Hotel TV system (fed legally) with your own cable head end is legal.

For a private individual there is no legitimate reason to have a own supplied DVB-cable receiver. Not grey if there is Cable tV entering the property and you have one of these.

Non-Sky Satellite Decoders are legal to have. But even to take French, German or Dutch PayTV in Ireland *WITHOUT* the subscription is a crime. Legitimate sub to ANY Sat service (even Sky without a Sky box) is legitimate.

It's Cable T&C that you can only use box they agree with EVEN IF you have a sub. That is the main difference with Satellite Pay TV.

FTV cards are perfectly legal under EU law, as is using a Dutch or German sub in Ireland. It's decoding WITHOUT the legitimate card or sub that breaks the law.

Using a non-UPC cable decoder with the UPC card (nothing extra free, correct subscription) does not break the law, but breaks NTLs T&C.

    There is nothing grey.
