I have recently started renting in a house that has sky digital and for me, believe it or not, was a first. Having so many channels is great but one annoying thing I found from watching digital is every channel goes on their ad breaks at the same time! Now before this I had a problem with ads but now I absolutely hate them! I cringe everytime they come on now! I know why they all go on at the same time, not looking for that to be explained, just wondered anyone else share the hate I do for ad breaks....?

Or record your favourite tv shows and skip through the ads. That works for me.

You'll generally find at least 1 music station not on ads, use that as a fallback....

Is your satellite dish aligned properly?????

    :cool::cool::cool:

Seriously, I feel you. Its the same with Film4 and +1. You get an ad and you skip over to see if you can keep yoself entertained. No chance.

I guess if they had ads at different times, nobody would ever get to see the ads, and, from a marketing pov, thats no good.

What's needed is for the ad content per hour of programming to be published for each channel just like the way it's possible to know how much fat, salt and MSG is contained in a food product.

If UPC and SKY did that, people might be better able to realise what a rip-off the 'hundreds' of extra channels are.

Ah but what actually constitutes "Advertising"

I mean theres all that "product placement" and "sponsored programming" and most of daytime TV consists of interviews with some guy who has just written a book/made a film.

And come to think of it even the BBC broadcasts over an hour of advertising every week for the gawdamn lottery

To be fair, most of the crap on Sky Digital costs nothing extra to the viewer so you can hardly call the channels in question a rip off.

I remember a few years back Sanyo brought out a Video that automatically stopped recording if it taught an advertisement break was happening. I taught it would be ****e but it actually worked very well so the technology has already been developed to counteract the annoyance of advertisements...but as already stated most Television and indeed Radio channels are in existence due to the revenue collected by advertisements and then there is RTE who collects both advertisement revenue and collects the TV License fees and still repeats everything I already seen elsewhere...

I guess in reality there is no ideal solution to please everyone lol:D

So how come its not on every video now ?

I cannot answer the reason it isn't used on all recording equipment I can just tell you the software does exist as I have seen and used a VCR that has this facility....by doing a quick Google search I came across this patent registered in the US in 1996 for such a device...

Also have a read of this

    http://www.mediacollege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=683

Sanyo claimed this VCR worked by calculating the amount of time the screen stayed black when switching to ad's although not 100
% accurate I found it to be impressive myself..

Back in the day, certain stations would transmit a signal to indicate that a cut in the tape was about to occur, and a system was developed to pick up on this signal and thus no record add breaks. The way in which stations transmit has since changed.

Channels like UTV used to put a little black and white box in top right corner to let you know an ad break was imminent...handy when some thing decent was on and you wanted to fly and put the kettle on or take a leak lol

Phillips have applied for a patent to stop you skipping advertising. Not sure if you have to answer questions afterwards to prove you watched the ads, but it's certainly headed in that direction.

Future enhancments are rumoured to be automatically locking the doors so you can't go and make a cuppa.

An apparatus (270) and method is disclosed for preventing a viewer from switching from a channel when an advertisement is being displayed on the channel. The apparatus (270) and method comprises an advertisement controller (270) in a video playback device (150) that (1) prevents a viewer of a direct (non-recorded) broadcast from switching channels when an advertisement is displayed, and (2) prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast forwarding the recorded program in order to skip past advertisements that were recorded with the program. A viewer may either watch the advertisements or pay a fee in order to be able to change channels or fast forward when the advertisements are being displayed.

The ITV signal was (is ?) for the benefit of the varous ITV regional stations to let them know an adbreak was coming up so that they could cue up their ads. Obviously it is not intended for viewers or video manufacturers :D

    RE: The Phillips thing
So If Im watching Channel 5 and I want to switch to BBC2 I cannot until the ads are over then If while Im switching through the channels there happens to be an adbreak on Channel 4 or ITV I have to sit through that as well

Yup I can see Phillips selling a lot of those TV's like

I can see that catching on

AFAIK Sky preemptively patented at least one method on DVRs, thus preventing it getting in to the wrong hands unless they say so:(

Who knows what kind of hardware we'll have to use in the future. It's probably a just matter of time before the industry takes control of the whole viewing experience and we'll have a 1984 scenario.

After all, on many popular DVDs you have to sit through a ton advertising every time you put the disc in because you're forbidden to skip or fast forward.
