Phase One - Capture One

Right, am having a very quiet Friday morning here in work and think I'm finally getting my mojo back. (lots of ideas for shots / angles floating around my head)

But one of the things I still need to get my head around is the post processing, it just doesnt hold my attention for very long... all I do is adjust whitebalance, play a bit with levels and curves and then crop / resize as needed.

Mostly I've been using adobe bridge, but it's cumbersome. Lightroom might work, but i'd need a monster of a monitor (I've only a 19")..... have they never heard of screen real estate?

So I've been looking for alternatives, used bibble for a while... but thats more a replacement for adobe bridge.

Next on my trial list is Capture One LE for processing my RAW files, is anyone here using it? And if so what is the good, the bad and the ugly about it?

Just installed 'Capture One 4 Beta 1' and am loving it..... Does exactly what I need it to do.... and so easy..... even a processing n00b like me can work it!

Just set a preferred output format (jpg, tiff, dng) and their options, such as dpi, size constraints, etc. Then make any adjustments to the raw files (including rotation, cropping and all the usual of levels, whitebalance, etc) Hit the process button or add to the queue and presto!!

See attached for a screenshot and if anybody feels like trying it out themselves, it can be downloaded from here

If they keep a similar price as 3.7 LE (99Euro) I'll deffo be buying this :D

I use Lightroom just fine on a 15.4 inch laptop screen. Photoshop is the one that gets all cramped. Roll on virtual desktops in Leopard.

Nothing wrong with that level of processing, all I do these days is WB, some contrast and colour adjustments and crop if needs be and that's it.

Lightroom is more suited to widescreeen monitors but it is extremely customisable and you can go from a view loaded with every tool bar and panel to picture only in about a second flat and then back again.

Heard good things about Capture One also though. I'll be sticking with LR though.

I've been using it for a couple of years now and love it.

The beta version is a big improvement especially on picture load times which were very slow on 3.7.

No need to buy it the moment as it comes free with any Sandisk 11 or 111 cards :D

Be careful to clear the cache after each session or it'll grind to a halt eventually.

yeah, just fired up lightroom again for comparison, think it's all the toolbars left and right that kinda scare me and put me off even trying to use it regularly. Guess its just me being weird :-)

Click on the little triangles on the extreme left and right and they will disappear ;) You can set them that they will reappear automatically when you mouse over them.

Or TAB shows/hides left and right toolbars, Shift-TAB does the same for top and bottom.
