Industrial Relations Disputes

    Howdy all,

Could anyone give me a very brief breakdown of what happens when employees, either through a union or otherwise, end up in dispute with their employers and both sides vow to remain stubborn to the bitter end?

In other words, does an inability to sit down and negotiate effectively; employers cut pay, workers strike, employers lock them out, workers vow never to give in, employer says tough you'll have to, etc, etc, spell an end to the company in the long term or can independent arbitration be imposed on one or both sides?

I know arbitration can be used if both sides agree to it, but can it ever be imposed with an independent arbitrators decision becoming binding?

Just curious considering the latest wars in the HSE, Aer Lingus, Ianrod Eireann, and past trouble in Irish ferries, etc, etc. Can individual disputes ever be forced to a conclusion???

The short answer is that it's in no one's interest to stop things completely. Normally unions and management aren't showing their entire hand and have a few "demands" that they're not too bothered about losing if they need to in order to reach an agreement.
