Useable classic ???

Myself and my missus relocated to Munich recently and sold up everything in Dublin including cars and bikes.

We are thinking about a useable classic, something that doesn't require huge amounts of molly-coddling etc, something we could pop down to the shops in if needed or take for a casual Sunday drive. We don't really need a car during the week because the public transport here is anally efficient.

Ideally a 70's German built auto diesel for ease of maintenance etc, any suggestions??

W123 on my shopping list too. 300D would be nice, but what about the 240D?
    Is it much more underpowered?

I'd go for a mark 1 or 2 VW Golf diesel or, as the others mentioned, a 123 Merc.

If you're looking at the 80s, an E30 is a safe bet, an 'is of course.

We had 2 E30's in Dublin and have sort of grown out of them.

The old Merc's are looking very very tempting ;)

Forgot to mention it has to be 30 years old or close.

The W123 was introduced about 30 years ago. Only problem is most of them might have gone east by now? If you're going for a 300D, try to find one with a replacement TD engine! (think the designation might be SD???).

    I'd go for the W123 300D also !

The 5 cylinder engine is far nicer than the 240D

That is an image I really could do without...!

Why does it have to be diesel? How about a 70's BMW, you should be able to pick up a 3.0 CS fairly cheaply and it'll run forever. Better looking than a Merc as well :D

why this criteria KTRIC? Are there similar benefits in the Fatherland to owning/driving a 30yr+ motor, as here, vis a vis taxation, insurance etc?
    Just curious..

and i'd plum for the W123 diesel too!

Very low insurance, no tax (i think) , so the prefernce would be at least 30 years old. That and we really like 70's cars :D

Cool... I suspect that you will have a much wider range of choice available to you over there. Good luck, and let us know what you pick up

try an Audi 100S coupe. I know its not diesel, but its a beautiful, and practical car (big boot). the saloon is good too!

240 is just about OK - will do around town and suburbia, but forget about rapid overtaking or doing much over 60 mph on the open roads. In terms of refinement it's generations away from modern diesels.

300 5 cyl is a smoother engine with more power but still generations away from the more modern engines.

I think an NSU R080 would do for you. Driving a Merc in Germany isn't going to satisfy as much as a rarer more interesting car.

Congrats and best wishes on the move to Munich. It is a beautiful city.

Definitely worth looking for something with an SD (turbo) engine fitted.

Seeing as you're going to Munich, I suppose it might be no harm to consider an older BMW.;)

You might want to research testing standards on classic cars over there, I was recently talking to a German classic car owner and he informed me that he has his cars registered in France because the German standards are extremely strict.
