The dangers of fundraising

From the Poker thread, I'm raging I missed as I play a bit of cards but being a PRO of a local Ros club I didn't hear a thing about it. Basically Roscommon County Board held a Texas Hold 'em Poker Tournament in Boyle to raise money for the team, guaranteed €10000 prize money and didn't tell anyone about it and lost €5000 as a result.

tis well for ya reporting on bad news - one event goes badly, so what.

what about the fact that the county board are not in debt anymore?

GAA/sports clubs should not be using gabling events such as poker to raise money imho

OK I've changed the title don't want it to be an anti-Ros thread but it was very poorly advertised and it takes a long time to raise €5k, also there is a one main reason why Roscommon are not in debt anymore (which isn't true btw), which you probably know.
One of the problems for using Texas Hold 'em/Poker classic events was a Kildare GAA club held one a couple of years ago and charged €100 per person had over 300 people gave out very little of the prize money and now they have a poor reputation amongst poker players.

In fairness tmt, a tournament like that will very rarely lose that much money so it must have been very badly advertised. patmac, what you say about the Kildare GAA club, problem is that every man and his dog is using poker to fundraise these days and most dont know how to organise one, much less what the regular players would expect. If someone took in €30,000 for a tournament, you would expect at least €25,000 in prizes. Technically it should be €90 going to prize, €10 going to organisers from the buy ins or something like that so prize should be even higher. Any less and its bad. But alot of these tourneys think maybe 10,000 prize from 30,000 taken in is a decent prize, but its awful! Rant over! :D

Ros got a loan to cover their debts, and they are paying it off at a very low rate of interest (could be none)

poker is a sham anyway. its like a night at the dogs - it can be rigged

too much fundraising is a bad idea

It isn't easy. I've been doing a bit myself, and still am. Have a look at my signature. Please donate. There are some GAA people going on the trip I will be on, so it does tie in with here.

As to Roscommon, they have bigger problems than fundraising. Lots of potential in the county, but they often fall short of it. If they get it together, they could beat Galway. They've plenty of time to prepare and the league to use as well. Focus on the pitch and their play is what they really need to raise.

Depending how its run. To rig a poker event would be very difficult if its run correctly and any rigging would be quite obvious.
