    Hi all

Just having a look around for a tractor for me dad
Know nothing about Tractors so be gentle

So he is a small almost retired farmer, he has a MF 35 but the lift arms need work and it is a bit fecked in general
All he uses it for is moving round bales, link boxes, taking home turf and the likes, nothing too heavy
All his sheds have low roofs so cant be a high tractor (hence the 35)

Just wondering were there any alternatives to the 35 as they are pretty expensive to buy
    http://www.fwi.co.uk/Classifieds/13800/massey-ferguson.html

Know nothing about these but they might be an alternative

    Any info would be appreciated

Are you sure it's a MF 35? The reason I ask is that the advent of the round bale finished their use generally as they can't lift one. AFAIK the MF 135 won't lift one either!

Edit: Oops - I've just realised that you are probably referring to hay/straw bales. I was thinking of silage! :o

If I'm thinking of the correct tractor, we have one done home from 1978.
    Old school, respect!

Yes, it can lift round bales and is handy for lifting barriers and moving stuff around.
Hasn't been taxed in years as it isn't realy road worthy anymore so not used on public roads.
But yes, it's well capable of lifting round bales around the yard.

WBD Farm Machinery are agents for Universal tractors. They are a basic budget 2wd tractor. They are very popular among north Dublin hoirticultural farmers who do not require huge power. They come without any cab as many of the buyers need access to glasshouses. I driven them a fair bit. Never had any major problems (apart from freezing to death).

    If it's a 1978 tractor then it's not a 35. They were launched in the early 1960s. ;)

The back pages of the Farmers' Journal usually have loads of adverts from tractor dealers from all parts of the country.

I would avoid some of the less popular makes as parts can be scarce and dear.iwould seriously look at restoring your own tractor as you know the history and the 35s are getting more valuable all the time and parts are easier to get than ever and your dad doesnt have to drive a strange tractor

restore the 35 you have. they are getting like hens teeth and a very good model can fetch upwards of 6000 euro. lift arms are cheap and a lick of paint can go a long way. i presume your dad likes it because its simple and does the job - dont buy some new pice of junk - modern small tractors wont have the reliability of the 35. btw if you loose steering while lifting bales fit a weight carrier to the front (providing its a square axle) and put on some 27kg weights.

a 240 is around 45 hp and has a nice cab too , its not one of those old crappy canvass ones

....and they still looks modern/fresh even though they have been around for many years.

(I didn't know they still made them moe - thanks for that bit of info! :))

as i said , massy have licenced out the manufacturing of them , dont let the fact that there built in india annoy you , many things are nowadays , there was a tractor called a TAFFE at the ploughing a few yrs ago , was exactly the same in every way shape and form as a massy 35 , cost 8 k brand new

    John deere 2130 75hp with power steering 2 to 3 k
    ford dexta
    david brown
    ford 3000
    search buyandsell.ie
you could get lift arms fixed and mf 35 done up like new
small tractors have gone up in price a lot in last few years as a lot have been exported and the ones left have been snaped up by vintage tractor guys who fix them up and keep them.

If the chromed parts of the hydraulic rams on the lifting arms are corroded causing leaks E&G Manly in Ashbourne Co.Meath can redo them , i've used them a few times .

There's no external hydraulics on a 35 lift.

Ah ok , I don't know much about tractors , i used them to redo old bike forks.

the 240s made in india are rubbish in comparison to the machine you have. Tafe are a bad replication at best - thats why they never took off in the uk or here.

have you had the hydraulic oil and lift filter changed?

that might be all that's needed.

    What did you do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,722 ✭✭✭maidhc

Id buy something like a Ford 4000 or 4600. They are a genuinely useful tractor with 60hp. We have 3 of them, and they do everything from wrapping and drawing silage bales to scraping and can even run a round baler at a push. Can be got cheap enough too.

i would restore your own tractor . There is a good scrap yard in kells in meath , you can get a lot of the parts cheapish there
