Suzuki GSXR600 valve clearances

    Hi lads,

    Another problem!!
I had a problem awhile back with a ticking sound coming from my bike. GSXR 600 K1. I got a mates uncle (who used to be a bike mechanic) to have a spin on it. He told me it was valve clearances needing adjustment, as the bike was quiet when started from cold , but as the bike heated up and oil thined out, a ticking sound came.
Does anybody know if getting valve clearances adjusted is a big job and would it cost much by a mechanic?

    Thanks for replys in advance!

I think the GSXR uses shims which can be a pain. It's not too big a job depending on the bike but but I'm not sure how bad the GSXR is to get the valve cover off. Call around for estimates.

Usually valve noise is worse when it's cold, not hot. Oil temp has nothing to do with it unless you have hydraulic tappets (Harleys and some cars, NOT Jap sports bikes.)

If the valves are too tight you will not get any funny noises at all. Symptom can be loss of performance when hot and hard restarting when hot - or no symptoms at all until exhaust valves burn out

If the valves are too loose then you will get noise, which will be worse when cold as the clearances will be even bigger.

I would suspect that you camchain and/or tensioner are shot, best to replace both together anyway. This tends to be a ticking noise from the rear of the engine block, this is easiest to hear when the revs are just getting back to idle after blipping the throttle in neutral. Not a huge job to fix but needs to be done with care as getting the valve timing wrong will cause a lot of damage.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
