downloads kill my internet completely

    hi there

right ive tried a lot of different things to see if i can fix this problem, but im at a dead end.

when downloading anything through a file share program ( ive tried loads )
my internet connection goes completely dead.

we have 3mb eircom bb. using a wireless router. my brother plays his xbox360, my dad is surfing and im playing counterstrike and also downloading a few files through firefox.

everything works fine! no lag for anyone and no problems.

as soon as i download something through a fileshare program like dc++ or azeurus everyone gets dropped from games, and no internet connection works.

im not even downloading much really. maybe a 100mb file and its at a rate of 50kb/s - 80kb/s max.

ive had to close azeurus to post this on here.
ive forwarded the correct ports and gone through the set up loads of times and cant find anything wrong with it.
it takes about 1 min to load up google, and anything else wont load at all.

anyone any idea why? or any solutions to fix the problem?

Is the filesharing program uploading at the same time?

sometimes. we dont have a big upload speed

    Speed = 3072/384 (kbps)

Was just asking because i had the same problem a long while back with a filesharing program and it was the upload that was crippling the connection even though i wasnt downloading at full speed.

yeah i was thinking that might be it, but even when there is no upload traffic at all, it still happens. even if it downloads at 5kb/s it kills the internet connection for everyone.

Just a thought but could azureus be set at the moment to have max upload/download speeds?? Maybe if you change this to a smaller number so that your upload/download won't eat up so much of the bandwidth...

    What i was gonna say:D
Id disable the upload completely. Also, are you sure azureus isnt running a third party program in the background that could be hogging up your bandwith?

If you disable all uploading dont expect to get a good download from the people that neeed the bits you have. As the upload is proportional to the download. If you knwo what i mean.

Are your ports forwarded? Yes? I have the same problem too. From the research I've done, the problem is the firmware on your router. From what I understand you can attempt to flash it, if it takes, fine, if not you're buying a new router. Alternatively, buy a new router. So, if the problems that big of a deal to you, you can look for updates and attempt to flash them. If it works and doesn't resolve your problem or doesn't take, new router. Just do some research on the routers before you buy them.

    Sounds like Throttling to me.

Digiweb do the same - my 3 meg connection used to die as soon as a torrent or filesharing program opened. Digiweb detect filesharing traffic going through certain ports and throttle your connection down as soon as traffic hits those ports. It was unreal how responsive it was. Clicking 'pause' on a download gave me everything back full speed, and then as soon as I click resume back down she went.

Stops people raping their connection for illegal material and keeps their network nice and quick for legitimate traffic.

Eircom don't do throttling as far as I know, I've used it all the time and there's never been a problem.

And it sounds like you said your problem yourself - Azureus - it uses Java and a lot of resources, esp. if your using Firefox with multiple tabs open and playing a high quality game. I suggest switching to uTorrent, it's basically the same easy-to-use interface - but no java - about 1MB in size, with very little CPU hogging.

Anyway, I do suggest you set a static IP address to yourself on the router (your IP being the name of your computer that shows up on the router) and add your port to it. Just do the following but before you add your port, set the static IP address.

With all due respect if you pay for a 3meg connection you should get a 3meg connection regardless of what your using the 3megs for. You would hardly say that a motorist was raping the road by driving at 50kph in a 50kph zone, would you? Same with bandwidth, give me what I pay for.

Please note I'm not condoning breach of copyright but am merely making a consumer rights point.

I couldn't agree more - I didn't like the throttle but I understood why it was there. From the ISP's point of view they could either allocate the bandwidth to joe soap downloading his email and windows updates or offer a 24/7 full speed link to a guy who wont pay for music.

To use your example of the road - its the equivalent of some dude using the bus lane to get to work faster and holding up the bus.

I'm not saying I endorse throttle, but I understand it.

Also, not condoning breach of copyright btw. ;)

    Great analogy.

I have Digiweb 3Meg DSL, and I've found the same thing.
I might have 4 or 5 things dowloading in Azureus and my net crashes.
I add them back one by one and when I add the 'bad' one it all collapses again.
    Sounds like Throttling to me.

Surely this is in their T&C, if not is it not illegal for them to do this?

From my experience, playing games online while downloading just doesn't work. Ever.

I'd also highly recommend uTorrent over Azerus. With most (all?) filesharing programs you can set upload/download bandwidth limits on them - I find setting the upload limit to about 2/3 of your realistic capacity (which from my experience is about 3/4) makes browsing still functional at least.

ok, ive removed azeurus and installed utorrent.

ive transfered over all my downloads.

and im surfing away and my brother is on playing halo3 online

:) all working fine! thanks a mill for the help

There you go - utorrent is probably using ports that aren't monitored by your ISP.
Should be fine - but as zilog_jones said - Downloading and Gaming is like rooming with your ex wife's mother inlaw - it just doesn't work.
