I got a new job using one of the jobs wesbites... had a look today and the job is still there! Worse still it says it was updated TODAY! Only here a few weeks and thought I was getting on fine... do these websites refresh automatically or is my new boss still looking?

If it's jobs.ie they seem to refresh the jobs all the time despite sometimes the jobs being taken. It's really annoying so I wouldn't worry about it Josephine.

Seems to be the job websites updating the listings themselves.
I've applied for a few jobs only to be told by agencies that the vacancies were
filled months ago and they had removed the adverts from the sites. I forwarded
on the links and they said it wasnt them updating the adverts.

Some of the jobs websites keep the adverts active to make it look like theres
loads of jobs available and so get more people to apply via them.

Getting the same problem, but I have a feeling it's the agencies not updating the jobs so they can continue getting CVs in for their records.

FYI none of the bigger jobsites update the jobs automatically.

Recruiter may a)know about a need coming up, b) be "fishing" as someone called it or c) forgot/didnt bother to take it down (NB you can update your jobs in one go, not individually so this can happen).

When you ring an agency ask them straight out is the job still open, AND if your coming in to meet them what the likelyhood of it being open when you meet/agree to have CV forwarded.

Unless I plan to approach companies on behalf of a candidate I do not get them in to me unless there is a live job for them (or likelyhood of one)....

I know for a fact this is not true.

It is standard practice in the industry to refresh jobs if they haven't received a large amount of applications. This is done as a service (try to be helpful) more than anything else.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it though.

Basically if you want your job advert to be offline, log into your account and take it offline.

EDIT: Sorry I misread the original post. I see - the job you recently filled is still being advertised. This would be quite normal :) as the HR people just haven't taken the job offline yet. Don't worry about it!

yes but it is the agency who refreshes them not the job-board people as implied. I've used all the big ones and none of them refresh your jobs, well certainly dont claim/advertise it if they do......

How do you know it as FACT???

I've worked for some of the big job boards :)

The staff in the job board do generally refresh the adverts. Basically they are "looking after their jobs" and making sure their client gets as many applications as possible.

fair enough makes sense - so can they bump them up the listings without the client (recruiter) knowing?

Absolutely. Again, they see it as a service as the job is now at the top of the list rather than off in the middle somewhere...

You can generally be sure jobs which are refreshed/bumped often are not getting many job applications.

so Im guessing if i complain that i'm getting bad results - they will be bumping me up continually???? especially around renewal time?

Acutally the bigger websites do update the jobs automatically. You have to pay extra for it. I have it with 2 of the biggest in Irl - auto refresh every 7 days.

I take it that refreshing just means bumping the vacancy up the listings, and does not address the fact that agencies seem very slow in marking vacancies as filled?
