connecting mp3 player to ps3 via usb

I might be completely out by the side of it by asking a question as dumb as this, but I bought a PS3 at the weekend, one of the 60Gb ones and was pleased (and surprised) to see that there's the whole thing of ripping mp3s on it, and so on.

Now - as it happens, i've got an IRiver HP140 and the connection which goes from the USB to the wireless controller is the same as what fits into the IRiver. I had thought that the PS3 could handle some class of external drives.

is this the case? I've connected both and nowt really happens...

    anybody got any thoughts...

    cheers

    GT

ps3 can deal with external drives alright, but the folder system has to suit the ps3. it won't search for your files, they have to be in a folder called "/music" afaik. i haven't tried it myself though...

Got 2 tracks on my Ps3, the reason they got was they were on the root music dir on my MP3, could'nt access the songs that were in folders on the music dir.

You should see an icon for your mp3 player/hard drive on the menu screen. Highlight it and press triangle, then press display all. This will show you all the folders if it doesn't display them automatically.

It should work. My zen neeon shows up. Navigate to the removable drive under the Music section, press triangle, then select display all.

edit: Is your mp3 formated as FAT32?

thanks all for the replies; I have a few random tracks in the root drive, but (organised little treasure that i am) most everything else is in folders, as y'all would expect.

None of 'em show up, and whilst the player does *sometimes* show up as an external drive, when i did the triangle->information thing as suggested by Nialler24, it just said that there was a 15Gb hard drive connected, but that was it.

As for how the drive is formatted (FAT32 and so on as nekkidbibleman says), I genuinely don't know. It's formatted the way it came 'out of the box' and the only noodling carried out by me was installing the 'rockbox' firmware on top of the regular IRiver OS. I've tried booting it up in IRiver mode and the results aren't any much better!
