    Hey guys...

I'm not entirely sure how I want to say this so ill try my best :)

Ive been given a second chance to continue college (was nearly going to leave) and since then ive been alot more positive after thinking the big man upstairs must have some role for me to play in this life, and ive been thinking more and more lately of all these things that i want to try but never have had the confidence to pursue.

This is going to sound kinda silly but ive always wanted to learn how to break-beat/breakdance/Battle and ive never found the confidence to do it but im really interested in it now but I feel like i still dont have the confidence to pursue it. When i see it on TV, online etc i get all goosebumpy and tingly and nearly find myself dancing in my seat. Now, currently Im not the fittest and thats something i want to do to get my confidence levels up but im just not sure where to start?

Does anyone know of any places where they would take a noobie? Ive also been wanting to get into Dj'ing for years, yet again my lack in self-esteem confidence has haltered me from going for it.

Anyone have any advice how to take the bull by the horn with it?

Im sure the answer is staring me right in the face but its nice to have a few people comment on it :)

(Admin, if in wrong forum, apologies, move if needed )

OP, I'm not sure whereabouts in the country you are so there may be specific people you can get lessons or mentoring from. Regarding the break-dancing side of things, it can be very physically demanding depending on how complex you want to make your moves and routines, so you'll need to be quite fit and flexible.

You can work on this by taking up a martial art - capoeira in particular would be useful as it is a lot more rhythmical and musically-oriented, and it also involves plenty of techniques which you could adapt for use in breakdancing.

Alternatively, you could try something like modern dance classes first, and subsequently approach break-dancing from a more formal background. Again, you'll need to be reasonably fit to progress but so long as you start at the beginning you can build this up over time.

Can't help regarding the DJ side of things (I presume you want to learn about things like scratching, as opposed to just being the guy who plays songs in order in a club), but you could start by checking out the Wikipedia page on scratching and experimenting with the vinyl emulation software they mention. While it may not lead to skills you can apply on actual turntables, it should help you develop an ear for how scratching works.

Nice one Teddi! Go for it! I have always thought that breakdancing would be cool - can you let me know if you find anywhere to do it? You'd need to be fit - but you would get fit doing it - so that's not a problem!

If you have the chance to go back to college, then that's the perfect place... depends where you are, but I know DIT have excellent DJ and breakdancing societies. Anyone is welcome newbie or not, and it'll cost you virtually nothing.

I took up a bit of hiphop/breakdancing when I was younger. Did wonders for fitness/confidence/social life. Do it.

    Good on ya.

Check out the college SOCs. Most students will be inexperienced, just like you.
