Advice needed

I bought a fiddle from a disreputable man for 500 euro and now have need to sell it. Others have told me that it needs work and I received an offer for 200. I can't afford to lose 300, but don't know what else to do. The man who initially sold it to me doubts it will sell again and so claims to be unable to refund my money as he has no current commissions. Any advice would be appreciated.

Did you buy it new or used?

If you bought it new you may have some comeback. If you bought it used, fix it up and play it or sell it and remember the lesson you learned.

When you say disreputable, was this a company or a private individual? Do not post the name of the person and/or company at any stage.

    How badly damaged is it?

It's an antique French violin, so yeah it's used, but was told it would be best for fiddling because the sound is better on old wood. It was a small company I bought it from. The craftsman obviously didn't know how to assemble the parts properly because the neck has too large a gap from the fingerboard, and the bridge is too high. Apparently the whole neck needs refurbishing. I'm still new to the fiddle scene so I don't have much more information to offer about the instrument :(
