Nudge function in photoshop

Would anyone have any idea why the nudge function (1 pixel adjustment)
in photoshop would not be working. When you try to move /place an image using the arrow keys (up / down / sideways) there is no response, the function is either disabled or there is a glitch in the programme and it is not working. I'm working on a laptop and am wondering if that has something to do with it.

Any thoughts / help would be appreciated.

Press V, or select the BLACK ARROW tool at the top. Should work then.

The background layer is locked by default. You might need to unlock it. (double click it and hit OK). If you place an image into your document it will be pasted in free transform mode so you don't need to use the move tool to activate nudge.

I'd imagine that the lappy keyboard might be an issue... did it work in this machine before?

Try (Cntrl Shift alt) + arrow keys. Any joy?

Thanks for coming back folks. I've tried the suggestions with no joy.
However the plot thickens. Yesterday I did a bit of reseach on the Adobe site to see if there was anything that might help me. What I found was disturbing.
I purchased my copy of CS2 a few weeks ago on ebay and it looks like I've been done along with a lot of other people. What I've got appears to be pirated software. It looks like the real thing right down to the serial number, manuals, packaging etc. and if you go onto ebay today you'll ee what I'm talking about (link below). Anyway several posters had comments on the Adobe site in relation to the same software and the glitches that were showing up like the arows thing and such like. At his stage I feel like a dick head, as they say if it looks to good to be true it probably is.

Ouch, thats not good. Sorry to hear that.
Odd that that seller has 100% positive feedback.
Even if it is a dodgy copy, why would it have such bugs?

I reckon the version their selling is a pre-release version containing production bugs that we're ironed out for the release version. Must have been leaked out via someone in Adobe.

Make sure you give the guy negative feedback stating it's no genuine.

I assume the version you have doesn't as you to register online? It's mandatory with the release version of CS2.

That would explain the packaging looking to be in order alright.

It's interesting that you should mention registration as I have ben unable to register online. No problem activating using the serial number provided but when you register it accepts the details but when you close down and open up again the registration form comes up again. So in effect it does not register. On the Abobe site a lot of the talk was in relation to the so called "Power sellers" who had hundred's of positive tranactions who were flogging this stuff. When buyers went back to the power sellers in question they had disappeared. From what I can see ebay is a hot bed of fraud and deception. I've only ever carried out 2 transactions on ebay, with the first a scammer tried to con me out of €3000 for a racing bicycle and this is the second.
