Hi all heading to Italy in November for 9 nights and was wondering where people would recommend ?
Was thinking Pisa, Naples and Rome ..
Hope to Climb Vesuvius if we can too...
    Anyone done that ?

Also how expensive is the accommodation there ? I know it's a very general question but my options are open and I do like to wander :)
    Thanks

did Venice ... Florence ... Rome ... that was about 2 years ago and it was amazing

I would definitely recommend Venice but it could be a bit cold this time of year ? ...

Rome if its your first time you'd need to spend about 4 days there after that you've seen the main bits

If you plan on seeing the Vatican ... get there early ... queues can be a bit ridiculous

If you are planning on going to Naples to see Vesuvius and Pompeii, don't stay in Naples! It's horrible and you gotta be careful about being robbed there (we were told this by the locals and the police down the coast from Naples).

We stayed down the Amalfi coast (Amalfi, Minori, Positano, Sorrento) are all beautiful towns built into the cliffs. So jet down there if you can. There is an AMAZING hotel up in Amalfi called Hotel Santa Caterina. Total luxury but well worth it if you can afford it :)

I have done lots of similar trips but more up in the north. The train system is good so it is easy to do 3 or 4 stops.

Flying into Bologna gives you lots of options as it is a rail hub. Also not a bad place for a night or two (lots of life, university town, etc). From there you can hit Venice, Florance, Siena, Lucca, Modena, Verona, etc with relative ease. I would definately recommend Verona but not for more than a couple of nights. Venice may be best at this time of year.

    Enjoy!

Fantastic guys thanks for all the tips...
Have any of you been to Capri ?
I think after Pompeii and Vesuvus we might head there ...

Pisa, don't make it a destination, just a stopover. It really has sod all but the tower. Naples is grand outside the city centre, but the centre is scary! You must go to Florence, and if you have time, Genoa

Haven't gone to Capri myself but my folks have. Said it was ok but insanely expensive so they wouldn't go again. You're better off just going to the likes of Positano or something instead.

like most posters said don't stay in naples (horrible city). i spent a few hours in the city centre there and everywhere you look its scumbag city

stay in sorrento about 45 minutes south of naples (beautiful town and a short 15 minute ferry trip to capri). Capri is wonderful and comes highly recommended from me. If you catch the early morning ferry and leave capri on the last ferry in the evening you have enough time to explore the whole island, don't miss anacapri and from there get a chair lift to the top of the mountain for a view that has few equals on planet earth imo. The blue grotto is amazing too.

Sorrento is only 20 minutes or so by train from Pompeii so you can easily make it your base and then there is the amfali coast, just wow.

Rome is nice and well worth a visit and so too is venice. Pisa and verona are only so-so cities and nothing worth writing home about.

Accommodation can be expensive and its better to stay out of the main city centres due to price. When we to Venice we stayed in Treviso about 20 minute train journey away.

Id agree about Naples i felt like i was going to be mugged at any moment while there, didnt get to see much other than the harbour and the train station/airport but that was enough not to go back!

If going to sorrento ( which is a 25 minute Hovercraft ride from Naples harbour) id recommend the CapeDeMonte hotel, its 4star and expensive but its amazing and the view!

Vesuvius and Pompeii, bit of a let down to be honest....

Don't try and do too much; I would stick to just one region as there is so much to see. Last holiday to Italy was to the Amalfi coast so in summary...avoid Naples...we thought Sorrento was quite busy (though we were there at Easter), Positano and Amalfi were smaller and more charming. Pompeii is amazing but take the time to take a proper tour. Capri is v chi-chi; lots of lovely shops and restaurants if this is your thing? beautiful walks and views. We stayed in Anacapri at the Palace Hotel which was pretty amazing.

We stayed in Minori on the Amalfi coast, 4 km away from Amalfi. It goes like this Minori .. Amalfi ... Positano ... Sorrento so it's all in the one direction down the same road. Positano is about 30 mins from Amalfi.

Stay away from Naples!! The locals told us that mugging is so bad in Naples that women can't wear earrings in their ears because thieves will try and steal them out of your ear (it has happened a lot apparantly). Sounds crazy but we heard this from numerous people.

Does anyone know any cheap and cheerfull hostels or B&Bs that we can stay in Rome ?
We arrive in at 11:45pm in to Rome with Ryanair so won't have time to shop around..
    cheers

I have stayed here. Very nice, off the main street, close to the Central train station. Needs to be booked early.
