I thought that offer was for the states only?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

It has been rumoured for Europe for a few months now, been holding off getting one until it was official.
    Thanks wba88!

Edit: Anyone know where the cheapest place to buy one is? £99 in PC World in UK, not sure if they have them here. €167 on BladDVD is the cheapest I've seen so far.

Yeah, was gonna put this up last night but it does state 'UK Only'

damn :(, got my hopes up there.. hopefully it will include Ireland soon.

For those looking to get the HD drive anyway, its in HMV for €175 with Superman HD-DVD free. Don't know if they do student discount on accessories because they don't on consoles but its worth a try!

I've been reading that the XBOX DVD player can be too noisy for watching DVDs. Anyone got one? Is the game controller the DVD player remote?

You mean the HD Player or the standard DVD Player in-built?

My mother is off to the states this month, gonna get her to pick one up.....

    Region free ftw!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Are they region free in the States? I assume they'd be region 1.

If not, balls.. would have got my parents to pick one up. They were in New York last week! :(

    The HD-DVD add-on.

I think you mean the Xbox. The Xbox is noisy. But not too noisy for me. We generally leave it on when flicking around on the TV.

The Xbox HD-DVD drives that I've seen advertised have the media remote included (example http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=328790)

Dont think there are. The inbuilt dvds are region coded.

Gona pick one up in england in november and get them to send the hddvd to my mates who live there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,420 ✭✭✭WellyJ

The HD-DVD Addon itself isn't region coded in any way.

It uses the region coding of the ACTUAL 360.

So if you buy one in the states you will still only be able to watch R2 HD-DVDs

However, most of them are still not region coded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,171 ✭✭✭syboit

hd-dvd has no region coding, if you use your 360/hd-dvd add on to play standard dvd's its only will only play the region it was intended for, in our case Region2.
xbox360 playing dvd's is quiete, its only when its spinning game discs it sounds like a jet engine.

prob not, you might have one of the newer benq drives (which are quieter) in your newer machine.

Possibly.. but it has a manufacture date of August 2006 so i don't expect the newest parts in it.

FYI Folks, this offer of 5 free hd-dvd's IS OPEN to the Republic of Ireland, I rang X-Box customer services today and was told that indeed it is open to us.

If you look in the x-box forum there are a few folks that got e-mail confirmation stating the same, I rang to be that extra bit sure myself.

Thinking of buying one of these for upscaling of my existing DVD's alone... any idea where is best for price?

EDIT: Never mind.. seems it's €159 in Gamestop. Will try my local store tomorrow.

IT doesn't upscale, it's just a USB drive. The 360 itself does the upscaling & given it has its own internal DVD drive.................;).

i was in smyths toys, gamestop, game, pcworld yesterday and only smyths knew about the offer but said it they couldnt be sure if it was valid in ireland, once i showed them in the terms and conditions where it said about "only valid in UK" they said it wouldnt cover here as well....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    OK now i understand.

So basically i'm thinking of getting the VGA HD Cable now instead as the only reason i was interested in the HD DVD Drive was really for upscaling.

Didn't realise the 1080p upscaling on the XBOX was so complicated.

I also asked the guys in Gamestop about this offer and they laughed at me! Thought I was nuts

It doesn't matter if they shop know about it or not as you get the free HD-DVDs from Microsoft, not them.

    Mine have arrived*.
Posted on the 12th, and arrived yesterday.

    * - Arrived to my sisters place in Edinburgh, as I still wasn't too sure if it'd be honoured here. So posted it away, along with my Gamestop receipt ;), and they've arrived safe and sound. Only wish I'd used my own address now!
