If you could recommend only one book for the common "user" (i.e., someone who is not a skilled hacker or programmer) that would help them become better at Internet security, what book would that be?

    There are loads, but....

For general IT crowd - Secrets and Lies is one of my favs, http://www.counterpane.com/sandl.html

for junior network techies "Hacking Exposed v5" is not bad.

    others include
"Enemy at the Water Cooler" is quite good for stories and
"How to Cheat at Managing Information Security", funny stories but some good advice.

...and the first person to recommend "Art of War - Sun Tzu" gets shot in the face.

Reviewing three books, and after skimming through...
    1. The Symantec Guide to Home Internet Security (2006) - an overview with very little depth, typical of Norton... Not recommended!
    2. Steal This Computer Book 4.0, by Wallace Wang (2006) - Lots of interesting stories, hacking details, and links, including a CD with all kinds of hacker goodies... Might be worth an indepth read?
    3. Hacking Wireless Exposed, by Johnny Cache and Vincent Liu (2007) - Whoa! This very detailed, indepth book instructs you on how to hack and crack wireless, as well as defend against attacks.

The Hacking Exposed you recommeded is a series. In addition to hacking wireless, there are also books that deal with hacking web applications, VoIP, the Anti-Hacking Toolkit, and Hacking Challenge 3.
