I am cuurently in the process of a new build with natural stone and am looking for advice on what stage to put in cills. Our stone supplier has suggested to hang the cills on specially made brackets (and install the windows) before the stone is build and our builder suggests to build the stone put in the cills as the stone is being built. All advice greatfully accepted!!

Hey, what do you know I am new to this too :)

Anyway with regard to your question it is probably best to install the windows and cills before the stone is built. This will ensure no ugly morter along the edges of windows. The stone mson will be able to build to the window and a good mason will leave no gaps. It should be better sealed this way.

Of course this will take longer to build as there will be a delay when waiting on windows when they are measured up.

    Heres what I done

    - bulit stone to cill height for first floor windows
    - fitted cills
    - got Windows measured & fitted
    - continued with stone to second floor cill height
    - fitted cills
    - got windows measured and fitted

There was a wait with the windows
I have heard of hanging the cills on brackets and don't think that would be a problem.

I would be interested to know what kind of stone cills you will be using. I am building my house with natural blue limestone on the front and thinking of granite cills, has anyone done this?
Stone cills in the front of house and standard concrete around remaining is what i was also considering.

I presume it is a block house you are building?

From what I have seen, they put the cills in prop them with blocks, put in the windows and then get the stone built, getting the masons in to do 1 part of the stone and back again could be a pain in the head

We are building sandtone with sandstone cills, like that we are using standard cills to rear as we are not putting stone on. The rear of house will be a rendered finish.

We are anxious to get moving on the window order so at this stage i think using the brackets to install the cills will be the best option.

We are building block house, with sandstone on front and both gables.
