Asking about salary

This is probably going to sound like a stupid query, especially given most the regular's animosity towards recruitment agencies.

Anyhow, I'm on the lookout for a new job, and there are loads online, most with agencies. I never ask a company about the salary for a job, but I presume it's not "bad form" when you're emailing an agency about a vacancy?

I don't want this thread to turn into an agency-bashing session, but so many of the jobs I've enquired about have either a seriously low salary range, or just don't exist (made up, or already filled), so I'm just trying to get all the details up front.

My impression was that you would tell the agency what your expectations were beforehand.

Well from my recent thread on my job hunting, I dealt with 2 agencies and they both asked my current salary (upped that a little) and salary expectations when I first met them.

In my recent job hunt, I've dealt with a few agencies. All of them have asked me up front what my salary expectations would be.

Even the company I am moving to asked me what I am on and what I would expect*. Just don't go asking about it in the interview.

*Side note: My new company's HR person said to me "I suppose you would be looking for [current salary+€20,000]?" Where most people would say "Yes, yes I am" stupid here said "Would I actually get that?". So take note kids, if your new employer gives you a figure and you are REALLY happy with it, STFU and say yes.

All I really wanted is for an agency to email me the salary range and the exact location of the company - like I said, there are loads of vacancies out there (many of which seem fictional), and rather than go through my career with every single agency, I just want a few details about the job - however it seems that most won't give any details without your CV, which I'm not keen on sending to every agency I talk to.

Considering agencies are just sales people who are totally money focussed, I don't think asking for salary details will offend them :)

This is true - I just don't like having to send in my CV just to find out pretty basic details. I don't know if it's a genuine policy to make sure only interested people are asking about the jobs, or just a guaranteed way to get more CVs for their records. Even if they promise not to send it on without explicit permission, it's still quite a personal document and I don't like the idea that so many people have it now.

I never ask in the interview, I always wait until they bring the topic up.
