Everyday I find things about Mac that I cannot believe how great they are... today its Macports!
Today I realised just how handy they are.

    sudo port install ffmpeg +lame +libogg +vorbis +xvid +x264 +a52 +faac +faad +dts

in a couple of mins, and a world of conversion at my terminal!! ahhh its just great really.

Cmon then... share what apps you think are just super!

I really dig using HamachiX, it's a neat zero config VPN thingamajig. I can see my itunes library on my mac mini anywhere in the world and have a casual game of Starcraft against buddies in Australia without having to resort to battlenet.

I also enjoy Transmission as a means of keeping up to date with the world of super crap tv without having to battle for the remote. Battling the Zerg hordes is bad enough :)

Bugger... you had to post this today didn't you...

Spent the majority of Sunday trying to port Festival speech synthesis tools to my iBook for my final year project. And now here you are showing me an easy way to do it...

    Damn you!

http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/ < this thingy. Doing a text-to-speech project for final year and using this as the grounding.

Think it's standard in Ubuntu (or at least available in the repositories) for the screen reader or something but I've barely any experience with compiling from source (other than "Hello World!" programs and the like) so it was painful to install on the iBook.

Doing a text-to-speech reader in a North Dublin accent :D

Back on topic, I presume this MacPorts app is for porting Linux apps to OS X correct?

Is it similar to apt on Linux?

TtoS for North siders!! hehehe classic! Here, my research is speech based, DSP/Comp Sci, if you wanna have a chat about any of that anytime just drop me a PM or whatever.

Sound :) Cheers Ms. Hz. May drop ya a line for a diphone/phoneme/etc chat once I finish sifting through the 30,000 pages of documentation I have printed out here on the desk.

And to keep on topic, today I are mostly loving Solitaire!

Sorry to interrupt this little academic discussion but...

    Quicksilver!!!

It may not be as brainy as the stuff you two are doing but I've finally managed to switch from Camino to Safari 3.0 because of it :D Since I can now add any search engine I like to Quicksilver and access it by typing a few letters, I have no need of Camino's 'add more search engines' feature :p

Sorry if this post is a little disjointed, I've been looking for a way to do this for the last two hours. Then finally figured out the answer was sitting in my menu bar the whole time.

Hmm, just had a look at Quicksilver there. Can't think of anything I'd use it for at the moment but sure I'lll give it a go :)

There's a demo and tutorial here for anyone that's interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBvFUhTqKK4

I don't understand everyone's love for quicksilver myself. It's frequently highly recommended in these kind of threads, but after installing it, I didn't see what all the fuss was about.

Less mouse work, an uncluttered dock, faster than Spotlight, the iTunes module allows me to play any song just by typing it's name, I can control iTunes globally with keyboard shortcuts, fast web searching on any website, quickly jump to any site I have bookmarked just by typing the site's name, etc. And I wouldn't be a power user of it by any means.

    Transmit.

It just rawks, everything you need in an FTP client in one tidy app.

God my life sounds so boring, eulogising an FTP client.

    :(

just to add to the discussion... i had quicksilver installed for aaaaaaages, never say the point to it... but when i watched that youtube tutorial i gave it another shot and now i love it!

im using a macbook so space on the dock is fairly limited. i used to use spotlight to launch not-dock'd apps but it was quite slow. quicksilver is ... quick. pops right up with everything, file & apps.

    download it NOW!!!

Not really Mac related but I use my mac to access this app:p Google Calendar. I can share my calendar with my friends/family/collegues and see theirs whilst viewing mine. It's really handy, and it just works.

It might just be a screensaver but Electric Sheep is definitely sprucing up my MacBook.

Needs subsequent downloads to get the most out of it but remarkable to just sit there and watch.

    Dash Clipping Widget!

There I was wondering when Apple would be updating Safari 3 to the full version for Tiger. I opened up the webpage for the millionth time and saw that it was still in beta. I thought to myself, 'If I had WebClip I wouldn't have to do this' (of course, then I'd also have Leopard, and the full version of Safari 3 already.) I typed 'webclip +tiger' into Google and look what I found :D

Very handy, if not quite as elegant as the Leopard solution.

I found Quicksilver to be very useful when I first moved to mac, cause I didn't know where anything was kept on the operating system (e.g. my files, preferences etc).

So if I wondered how to connect to my phone over bluetooth, I'd just type "blue" and it'd pop up. If I wanted to change my display preferences , I'd type "disp" and it'd pop up.

It's also great if you prefer keeping your hands on the keyboard at all times.

Today, I are mostly loving The Wiinstrument!

    http://screenfashion.org/2007/09/wii_remote_garageband.html

Have a mac? Have a Wii? Want to brush up on your rhythm but don't have space for a drumkit?

    Class!

It's a bit fiddly. Hard to assign samples to the controllers on the fly but I'd say with a bit of practice you'd be playing simple drum tracks fairly quick. Just got it installed and haven't had a chance to really play with it but I like it (it's a simple little idea and shows that the Wiimote and nunchuck can be used for things other than the Wii).

There's GlovePie for Windows aswell which I think someone wrote a script for for drums but don't think that transmitted MIDI.

You can use it with Garageband too apparently but I haven't gotten around to that yet

    Jumpbox!

One of the best so far, worth checking out.
Rather than build and entire VMware / Parallels machine you can download a preinstalled appliance (Not the same as the ones in the VMware appliance marketplace).

I've been using them to test changes / designs on my that use Wordpress, Joomla Etc. on my local network using parallels.
