Are you guys aware of any good companys that prvide this software that will track the device and report back real time? to a central server that we can log into and see where all the worker bees are????

    Interesting Idea,
But would they not go out of GPS range, as soon as they are inside? or in a pocket?

When they go inside a building but we would have thier last known location...... Also they will be using the device as a phone / call closing back over the devices web browser.

So we need to use a device for all....

thier are a few devices with built in GPS, i just need to find a company that can track them and give us a nice pretty interface for tracking the workers?

i would guess a bit of software that accesses the gps records and the uploads to a central database at a predetermined interval. only problem is if you use the gps in another piece of software (sat nav say) it would prob not work i know a few people working with pdas but here not doing that sort of stuff yet

Have you looked into vehicle tracking as the other method is far from ideal also as mentioned here, GPS works on line of site to the sky.

Unlawful is the term but its not that clear cut.

If you state that the devices are being used for the purposes of employee tracking then you are fine.

There is a Lone Worker element to this and unfortunately this sort of tracking will become more evident.

It's technically possible to track people by their mobile phones, O2 did it as an experiment a few years back though it's not as accurate as a GPS but it works no matter where the person is, even indoors. If person is in an urban area and visible (in the radio sense) to several transmitters, the network operator can narrow down the person's location to within a hundred meters or so.

What O2 did a few years ago was a demo aimed at parents tracking the kids, you went to the O2 web site and entered your mobile number, they sent a confirmation request to the mobile phone and the user sent back a confirmation after which the location of the mobile phone could be queried on the web. If the phone was switched off or was out of coverage, it showed you the last tracked location.
