Dell Precision M 50 mouse drift problem

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my dell Precision m50 laptop (4 years old). The mouse cursor drifts and then stays in a corner. It doesn't matter if a mouse is plugged in at this stage or not.

I reinstalled the touchpad driver, no change.

I found out on the internet that this is a common problem with Dell laptops, specifically the Latitude range. It is caused by the pointing stick in the middle of the key board and poor wiring. The quick fix said to set the device to ps/2 mouse in the bios and that the keyboard would switch itself off if a mouse is plugged in then.

Well, it kinda works. Only that the touchpad is completely dead now, not only if a mouse is plugged in.

I'm happy I can use it again but I am wondering if anyone knows a tool that disables only the pointing stick but allows you to still use the touchpad (there is no such option in the bios).

We've seen this problem several times,only fix for it is to remove the keyboard and cut the connector cable to the pointer stick thus rendering it useless and this will fix the mouse drift issue.

I found another solution:
install this dell touchpad driver from the dell web page.

(don't reboot yet)

then Install this touchpad utility.
Just google for Tp2aa10i.exe

Reboot now

After reboot you should see a new grey touchpad icon beside your system
clock. Right click on this and choose mouse properties.

In here you should be able to select the option "Pad" which will disable
the stick.
