    Hi lads,

Yesterday evening I got offered a very nice IT position, after dealing with a recruitment agency (these guys were actually good! :D).

Anyway, the new company is looking for a start date fairly quickly and the recruitment agency want me to start serving my months notice in the next day or two.

So the question is, is it okay to serve my notice before getting a written offer or is it okay to go ahead?

I'm new to resigning and moving job as this current position is a grad position. I searched the forum and found different opinions and have looked at the resigning sticky as well.

I really want to do this right so all help is very appreciated. Thanks! :)

I would not do anything until the contract has been signed, let alone a written offer.

If they are keen for you to start, then they can easily arrange for both parties to sign a contract. If they want you to call in and sign it, have them email you a draft so you can check out the T&Cs first.

Under no circumstances should you hand in your notice until you have something in writing.

I handed in my notice last week in my current job, but only after the new company gave me the offer in writing.

You are leaving yourself in a very vulnerable position if you don't have it in writing. Be firm - don't do anything until you get the offer in writing.

Good at what? Ignoring you when you find out that the job has gone south, and you have no job? As the last lot have said, don't do jack sh|t untill you have it in writing.

Do I detect a hint of animosity towards recruitment agencies? :D

Actually, I just remembered that I had only gotten a written offer when I resigned last year - I had yet to sign the contracts in the new place. However, I was open to a counter offer from my current employer, so it was a calculated risk.

Ah, God bless your innocence. What if he hands in his notice and the agency suddenly come back and say "sorry, no job after all"?

I don't think it is a matter of don't let it pass by, it's a case of make sure you have something in writing before you pack in your current job.

    Thanks for the advice lads.

I've talked to the agency and said that I want to wait until things are down on paper before I jump and hand in my notice.

As regards the dreaded topic of recruitment agencies, it was my first time dealing with them. I picked out two that have offices in Limerick and specialise in IT.

One was pretty poor with nothing happening at all, I basically had to hound them. The other was excellent, helped me with my concerns, great feedback and had a definite plan of action for getting me what I want. I just feel that if you find a good egg in a rotten batch they deserve a pat on the back.

Again, thanks for the quick advice!

If anyone wants the contact I'm using in the good agency, pm me.
