Hi, I'm cobbling together a media client. After lofy ambitions I'd settle for web browsing on the tv and digital music. But a nice to have would be playing dvd rips as well (quality not an issue, it'll mainly be thomas the tank etc). What's the min spec for playback of these? I've currently got a 600Mhz celeron with 128Mb, suspect this will not suffice. I've also got a 800Mhz VIA (can't remember the model but it's alledgedly got an mp4 hw decoder).

Am I going to get anywhere with these (using linux btw)? At one stage I did play back a dvd on the VIA (free from newspaper so guessing audio was basic or somesuch), but then had complete failure with another (led zeppelin boxed set, probably bunch more audio options, possibly just too heeeaaaavvvvvy...)

Also, would the mp4 decoder do anything for avi files?

600Mhz celeron should be fine. With windows 98 for example you can get away with a PII 333Mhz for DVD playback.

128MB of RAM is cutting it tight though, even if you are using a fairly minimalist install of linux.

Also, im not sure if the Mp4 accelerator has linux support. Im not 100% sure how its implemented so you might have to dig some more info on that up. As for helping your .avi files, needless to say it will only help with Mp4-complient avi's. Avi is Audio Video Interleave, however its covers almost every codec and compression rate including MPEG1, MPEG2, Raw etc etc.
