Would you hire someone with a tattoo? It seems to me that they are becoming more acceptable. Has anyone been refused work because of tattoos?

No, but mine is on my arm and even hidden when I wear a t-shirt.

I just wouldn't tell the employer tbh, unless you have 'RAPE' tatted onto your forehead or hands I wouldn't wory about it too much.
    Are your tats obvious?

Then again you can't tell, I mean I have no problem with them but mates of mine think they are ugly. However I think the old stereotype of tattoo = scumbag is dying away.

depends if its visible (on your forehead) of sexual or religious nature and or offensive content.

If it's on your back or somewhere that won't be visible at work then don't worry about it. If it's on your arm and will be poking out of your t-shirt/shirt-sleeve then that would be bad. I personally would think customers might be put off so no, I wouldn't personally hire someone with a visible tattoo. I slao wouldn't hire someone with face piercings. Ear lobes are acceptable (for either sex) but things through the upper part of the ear are not acceptable in most work places where a clean smart image is expected.

I've got one on the inside of my wrist and I'm doing interviews for a new job at the minute, I don't think it would matter toooo much but I'm careful just to keep it covered while interviewing..once they hire me they're stuck with me!

hows about if a guy came into an interview with a piercing, for example a lip piercing?? is that un-acceptable? a peirced ear would be more ok because its covered up perhaps by hair.

depends if its a tramp stamp or what not.

tatoos are a very personal thing, and if they arent when you get one your just a fool imo. People (girls) who get them done because they are cute are only fooling themselves. Tatoos last for life and they wear and change shape over time. You get it done because it means something to you and you always want it to be a part of you and to be presentable 20 years down the line. Not something that you got done because you wanted all the guys at the local nightclub to rub their peckers up against you.

One of the lads that i work with in our it department has letters going up his arm from above the wrist to his elbow on the inside. It looks very tasteful imo and he is a top notch fella. He is late 20's and very high up on the food chain, so i dont think it effected him at all.

It depends on what line of work you are in aswell. I want to get my ink done on the inside of my left arm, but i havnt found something that i think merrits getting put there yet, when i do, i will get it done and will get the job based on my 'expertise' in my chosen area.

If a boss has any cop on, he/she will higher someone based on their tallent and abilities more so than the way they present themselves. Lets face it, its an ever evolving world we live in, and the 'freaks' of the modern day are turning out to be very tallented at what they do.

What idiot in their right mind would higher someone who looks good, over someone who can do the job better than anyone, but just so happens that they have an ink on their arm?

If i was to work in a place that wouldnt let me express myself for who i am, i would have to quit as i see myself as a strong minded individual with great working skills at what i do. I get the job done fast and above all by the book and to the highest standard i can. If someone has a problem with that - fk em!

i agree to a certain extent, but as a student graduate with no experience i eventually had to cut my hair and remove my piercing to get over the first hurdle after being continously fighting a losing battle in interviews etc. so now im two years working i have nearly the locks back to theyre scruffy beauty and noone knows any different, once you have the talent.skills.experience then looks dont seem to matter. probably depends on your job too, im design based so maybe im allowed some creative expression.....hard to call

Don't get one on yer bum or jugs and yer fine.

Red_ice, disagree. People get tats for different reasons. Some just think they are cool. I know some people feel that it has to be personal which is a load of **** imo.

    Different strokes.

I have been a staff manager for years & now own my own business.

I also have plenty of ink - however, I can cover it up when the situation calls for it.

Also, it depends of the position I am hiring for, I would obviously not hire someone with large or visable tattoos for a sales, receptionist or any other position that exposes you to the clients on a regular basis.

On the other hand, I wouldn't have any problem taking on someone for a warehouse or factory (non customer contact) position if they had a full body suit.

This has nothing to do with talent or ability, just how the client views your company by how it's presented.

Horrible prison tats are a completely different issue and are a no no for me as an employer. If someone turns up at an interview displaying these then that should be enough warning not to employ them. Not because of their prison record, I am all for giving people a second chance, but because they were too stupid to cover them up.

Quote from Galadriel "I've got one on the inside of my wrist and I'm doing interviews for a new job at the minute, I don't think it would matter toooo much but I'm careful just to keep it covered while interviewing..once they hire me they're stuck with me!"

Not so my friend, any potential employee should be suitable for the position applyed for and must disclose or at least not mislead the interviewer. If, for example I hired someone for a sales position and they wore a suit jacket to the interview and on their first day at work they came in with a short sleeved shirt on displaying forearm tats (with no jacket to cover them), they would be quickly shown the door. Reason? Not suitable for the position applyed for.
