    Ive been offered a trainee software development position but the starting salary is poor any tips on how to get your potential employees to offer more?

    enquire as to how long you will be on that wage and if there is scope to advance to a higher wage as you progress. Ask for a likely timeframe and what goals or targets you need to achieve to get a higher rate.

    Find out (google) how much that position usually offers in Ireland and counter the company offer with that info.
    You need a better argument than "I want more", i.e. "It's usually 2 grand more, why are you offering a reduced salary compared to market standards?" "Is there other perks involved? Car, gym, dental?"

    Well the fact it's a trainee position means you probably have little or no real world experience so it can be hard to negotiate.

    I started on €27k two years ago as a grad, my friend started on €25k last year but quickly rose to €31k after a year. Remember reading on these boards that Microsoft are offering €33k this year to grads.

    The only things as the others have said is gauge the average starting salary for this year and if your offer falls below this bring it up with them.

    If it's a really good position though where good experience and training is on offer then really the money shouldn't be too important as you could always take your experience and move after 2-3 years, as you know experience is of the utmost importance in the early years in S/W development.

    Getting a company to take you on with no experience and most likely no knowledge of how 'real' software is written is a fantastic oppostunity, so I wouldn't be tough on your salary negotiations :)

    Think long term: in a couple of years you'll be earning a fortune...

    Personally if I was you I would live with it for 6 months to a year. Get the experience and then use the fact that you have a years experience to get you a good rise, if they dont then at least you have a bit of experience to go out into the job market with.
