DVD disk drive format. Whats that about???

Hi, Could anyone help? I don't know that much about PCs but I bought a new Dell with vista os. I have a DVD drive and I tried to burn a new disk but it won't let me until I format it. but this seems to take forever. Is this correct? And if I do it once do i have to do it again? Do I need extra software? Thanks:confused:
