    Hey,

I know this is probably a stupid question but I've always used combos before so it never came up. Just bought a new SWR 400w head and am going looking for a cab now... do I need a 400w? ie if I bought a 200w cab would it blow the cr*p out of the cones????

Any help or insight would be gratefully appreciated!!

    Cheers,

Of course it would blow up. You'll have 400watts of power going into 200watts of speakers. Get an 4 ohm 400 watt cab with 4 x 10 inch speakers.

Totally inaccurate statements there. According to its spec, that head gives out 400w @ 4ohm, or 250w @ 8ohm

The general rule of thumb is to give a speaker cab 1.5 times its rated RMS power. That's the only way you get sufficient headroom, of course a lot of folks can underpower the cab and be none the wiser but let's not scaremonger about "blowing up" speakers.

    Cheers,

Its horses for courses, but I think I'd lean toward either of the following:
150-200w RMS if its an 8ohm cab (the amp will be giving it 250w)
200-400w RMS if its a 4ohm cab (the amp will be giving it 400w)

That's going by the quoted spec I found here http://www.swrsound.com/products/search.php?partno=4450200010
