Scheduling Daily Burns - software to use?

    Hello! I'm trying to find some freeware/openware that will let me schedule daily burns to cd/dvd. I don't need the software to do anything other than burn specified folders/files to disc at a scheduled time everday.

    I've had a look about but haven't been able to find anything just right, and I'm sure there's something out there.

    Any suggestions?

    Hey,

    Might I suggest that you backup to a USB / Firewire hard drive instead if possible, that way all you have to do is run NTbackup from windows to
    backup any files, folders etc..and it has a built in schdueler...and its FREE...

    You could also try using NTBackup to backup to a CD/DVD, though havent tried this.....

    => Start
    => Run
    => NTBackup

    I am foolishly assuming that you are using a Windows OS??

    I was the one being foolishly presumptuous... it is indeed windows I'm using, and server 2000 at that.

    NTBackup won't work to CD/DVD unfortunately! But thank you for the suggestion.

    I'll give a brief rundown of the situation.. On 5 separate machines here, using Winzip, I do Full/Incremental backups of whatever data I need, and then FTP them to a W2K machine that has a bank of DVDRW's in it. I use Nero OEM on that machine to burn the zips to DVD. I have to manually drag and drop files into the burning ROM window. Nero OEM doesn't have scheduling capability.

    I do have Nero 7 Professional which has scheduling, but for some reason, it won't give me an option of write speeds, whereas the OEM version will. Burning at speeds faster than 8x produces frequent errors (relevant to the amount of stuff I burn, which is quite a lot).

    It's not an overly inconvenient thing, I'd just like to have full automation and this is the last thing that needs sorting!

    Thanks.

    Hey Chewy,

    Is there some particular reason that you are doing your backups to a DVD drive though?. Do they need to be sent offsite?.

    As said you wont run into these problems using a small external USB hard drive...from my experience schdueled backups to CD/DVD just dont work!. Given the price of storage, you could buy 2 x 120GB external USB drives. Send them offsite if needs be on alternative days??.

    The drives would also be quicker at backing up than a DVD drive....

    Thanks Feelgood,

    Yeah, I know there's easier ways to be doing this.. but unfortunately, this is the way it has to be done.

    I just found out that all versions of Nero come with command line functionality (nerocmd.exe funnily enough!) which I never knew.. so I'm going to give that a bash and see if I can get it going... I expect much head banging off keyboard though as the switches are a bit scary.

    the switches on nero are flaky indeed

    another option is to use mkisofs - get it with cdrtools
    this creates an ISO
    4GB limit though so you can't do 4.7 files
    http://www.g-loaded.eu/2007/04/25/how-to-create-a-windows-bootable-cd-with-mkisofs/

    write the ISO with microsofts CDBURN utility , maybe it's in the 2003 res kit or something

    ntbackup does NOT compress / you can use 7za to compress multiple files into one

    to date files use
    %date:~0,2%-%date:~3,2%-%date:~6,4%

    I'm still trying to figure out NeroCMD, and I'm nearly there, but I'm obviously missing something. Each time I run the batch, it starts writing the lead in, and then fails. I get the following errorlog spat back at me each time I run:

    "C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroCmd.exe" --write --drivename f --real --no_user_interaction --speed 4 --dvd --recursive --iso test H:\Folder\*.* --create_iso_fs --close_session

    I know these kind of logs are painful to read, but someone might spot something I'm not doing?

    - Capt' N Midnight, I had a quick look at that exe you recommended, but it looked scary too, so I'm going to try and stick with Nero and see if I can get it working.

    Success! I tried running the batch with Nero OEM instead of the version 7 we have here and it worked first time.. I don't know why, but it did.. my head was wrecked so happy days indeed.

    Thanks for the input :)

    Now I just gotta figure out what to do with my 20+ dud dvd's...

    Now that you have it working ..

    did you think to try getting DVD RW's and formatting them InCD or Direct CD ?
    IIRC then you can just copy files to them any way you want.
