Ok people i installed my ilife 08 on thursday evening and i spent this weekend playing around with it and here is what i think of it.

iPhoto 08 ---- Events is a big winner here, i love it. Posting a photo album to my gallery is a bit slow, but not toooooooo slow. The rest of it is just like 06.

    iMovie 08
I fubbing love it. It is far superior to imovie HD. I cannot understand why people ( on youtube, internet blogs and so on ... ) hate it. I read so much bad press about this i was afraid of it, but it is the bees knees. Trust me. There is a time line in it, sort of, ok the time line in imovie HD is better, but apart from the time line imovie 08 is the fubbing business. imovie HD remains in the computer after the installing of ilife 08 and if you want to make a movie in it you can, and you can transfer the movie over to imovie 08 after that, if you want, but be warned music and writing will not make the transfer. But at least you will have the better time line and you can play around with it. All the music and sound effects from imovie HD are still in 08 and you can still make a movie from still pictures on 08. My god, iMovie 08 is pure class end of story, and i loved iMovie 06.
BUT, THERE IS ONE PROBLEM --- uploading a movie to the .mac web gallery is such a pain in the back side, read what these guys say, i concur 100% with them
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5474966

I am going to leave my computer on all night tonight to make sure it gets to my gallery. I will report back tomorrow. I have not put a movie in youtube yet, i will try some day this week. But i get the feeling that waiting for it to go to youtube will not be a pain in the hole. i will report back some day this week.

Garageband 08 ---- i played with it for a while, yeah i like it and magic garageband is fun.

iDVD 08 --- I see no reason to use this, i may use it some day. I don't care for it. But uploading a movie to the .mac web gallery is such a pain i may use it some day. It seems easy to use.

iWeb 08 --- i was so afraid of losing my site after the upgrade because so many people around the world lost their site after the upgrade and have no site now. But i found this guy in youtube
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ30jbbhi4Y

I watched all this guys iweb videos over and over so many times and by time i was opening my iweb 08 i heard his voice in my head and i did not lose my iweb 06 site and i was able to ad from iweb 08 to this site. i cannot remember what i did but this guy helped.
I am redoing my site anyway because i signed up for google ads. That means i have to be clever in what i write anymore ( to get good ads) and not to be talking (or typing) from my backside anymore, like what i use to do.

Downloading my movie to my gallery last night ( while i was sleeping in bed) was a success. The movie is now in my gallery. But anymore i will download the medium version. Last night i downloaded the medium and large version. The medium is grand.

But when you go to watch your movie it is slow to load up, just like the apple site. For example when Steve comes out with a keynote speech i watch it on youtube and not the apple site because you are waiting forever for the video to load up on the apple site, while on youtube it is super fast. Apple better do something here soon, if youtube can do it why cant ' the best software company' in the world do it tooooo.

I will do a youtube video during the week, some time. I might put my movie on youtube, but i have to get permission from 4 other people cause they are in my movie. I will see.

Yeah have to agree with most of the above. I've done a couple of small movies in iMovie 7 (or 08? - yes the whole name and versions thing could be a bit confusing - it's iLife 08, but iMovie and iPhoto are version 7!).
Anyhow it is a breeze to use. The scrubbing thing is brilliant and adding clips and transitions has been improved on the whole - notably, the fade now does fade out and fade in when you add it between clips. Having said this video effects seem to have been removed. Gimmicky stuff, most of it anyhow I guess. Some nice new title designs as well.
However, it seems to be very much geared towards the likes of youtube, ipod viewing or for posting mp4's or whatever onto a website for viewing and there isn't obvious ways to make a home movie into a DVD like there is in iMovie HD. In fact iMovie 7 seems to work in a different way. For instance, if you make a movie from your still camera movie clips (great that all the apps, especially iphoto now recognize movie clips much better) and then happen to delete that movie clip while you are in iPhoto, it will not be available in iMovie. Movies from a dv camera import again as dv streams, however taking a 1 minute clip from my dv camera and importing into iMovie 7, saving as 'Large', and then bringing into iDVD 7 via the media browser gives a marked reduction in quality as compared to doing the same import with iMovie HD/iDVD 7 (hardly any noticeable difference from the original cam footage). Of course I could 'export using quicktime' as a DV stream or an mpeg2 etc but I'm not sure that all those sort of options would be available to people without QT pro.
Bottom line is if your end product is a DVD (especially from digital movie cameras) use iMovie HD and not iMovie 7.

can you be a little more detailed about imovie 08 (as in practical differences, effects, etc). Really thinking of upgrading and i think it comes down to what imovie will be like.

    ps. good review, very helpful.

    Is that bad.

Anyway --- if you were tot up scores from my above table the scores read
    imovie 08 = 13 //// imovie HD6 = 6 ///// draws = 3

imovie is the winner for me. I wonder how others would score. But i would be surprised if imovie HD won by a landslide.

Do i see myself using the old imovie again, answer is no. But you never know i might use it and i might not, 2% chance i would say.

there is one very very important thing i forgot to mention about imovie 08 ( it is the most important) ---- the time it takes to make a movie in imovie 08 is way way quicker than 06. It really is that much quicker to make a movie, it is unreal.

I found a way to help me ( although i am not ready to go BIG BIG on my site yet cause i just do not have the time . It may be in january before i will apply for adsense again, if i want to)

    Web Gallery

I have all my dad's photo family albums at this very moment in time, i want to scan these pictures onto my computer, not all, just a few good ones. All is going well. I have loads scanned so far.
I decided to put these old photos into my web gallery. it seemed to work, but it doesn't. When i go to view these old scanned photos in my gallery i can't. I can put photos from my digital camera into my gallery no problem.
Now i did not look into this problem yet, but i will. But to me it looks like scanned photos cannot go into the web gallery, this is just my guess, i could be wrong. For now i am just happy enough to put these photos into my iphoto and my website. although i want to put them into my gallery in case family members want to download them. But i reckon because of this download business scanned photos would not be good enough for the gallery, maybe quality will suffer big time. As i said i will look into this in a few weeks time. I just wanted to share this info.

I used idvd 08 yesterday for the first time, my god it is class. What was steve jobs on about when he said there was not much need for it.

Two days ago my brother told me he has three years of photos and short videos on his camera memory card. I told him i could put them onto a dvd for him. ( he has no computer, he uses mine when he comes to my house)
So i set out to make an idvd. I was blown away with how easy it is to use. The best part is when you have idvd open if you click help up at the top menu bar you can watch a video tutorial, i love this feature cause it is hard to remember all of this new stuff in the beginning.
Yesterday morning i made the idvd for my brother ( 2 hours it took me -- I could have done it quicker, but hey, it was new years day i had nothing else to do and i was in no rush.) When the family all met up for new years dinner yesterday evening we played my idvd of my brothers pictures and videos ( it only went on for 15 minutes --- 15 minutes worth of stuff took a half an hour to download from my computer onto the dvd)
Everyone was blown away by the dvd i made. It looked so professional. My brother said " jesus it would cost a fortune to get that done by someone"

It really is class -- the menu blew everyone away on the dvd. When you start a video made from idvd 08 you are brought into a menu and you can choose to watch video selections or photo album selection, it just looks so f---ing unbelievable.

I can see myself using idvd 08 more so now because the web gallery is slow. I read apple are looking into the problem of slow web galleries in europe. the web gallery in the usa is way faster compared to europe. i also read last week that the wb gallery in europe gas improved a bit in speed, but i did not check this out yet.
