Irish law on driving out-of-state owner's foreign registered car?

    Hi,

A friend of mine has moved continents, this means he has lost his parking space (in the UK) and need his UK registered car "looked after". If we were to bring the car here to IRL, can the car be driven here on the roads by me/himself when he visits? Am I likely to get pulled for duty/VRT even though its owned by someone outside the state? He has a UK license AFAIR too. The car is less than 30 yrs old.

    Cheers
    Steve

If he brings it over as a visitor ,he has 6 months to re-reg it or take it back. A Republic citizen is prohibited from driving it.It will need to be taxed and MoT's and Insured in the UK at all times.

If he's NOT a UK resident I don't think he'll even get thew 6 months period allowed.....

Yup, its taxed and MOT'd. No, the owner is Irish but lives abroad.
I had intended on adding it to my classic policy to insure it..
So.. it would have to sit where he leaves it?

Does this also apply for example if I wanted to drive a N.Irish car owned by an Irish citizen?

i think he might get away with it or he might get his car seized.....perhaps if it was well hidden? loads of people doing it, even a good few using old log books for scrapped cars....

hmmm... it'll have to be a car cover on the drive I guess ;-)

So, if you had norn iron based mate who gave you a loan of his norn iron reg'd car.. does the same apply?

The police are clamping down on non bona fide imports in my area: second week of road blocks stopping to check licence and Tax. A few sad faces in the cars stopped and impounded... Beware.
