Bred on league based sports, where there is a definable start and end to a season, what is the story with golf.

I ask from a personal perspective, I'm approaching my tenth round of golf in the coming weeks. Come the end of November, am I off the golf course for 4 months? I get the impression from some that is the way to do it.

It's kind of a personal choice uberwolf. About this time of year some people choose to put the clubs away for the winter months and not bring them out again until march / april time next year. Others choose to keep going. Alot of courses will switch to winter greens soon so for some the fun goes out of a little bit. Many courses will keep playing on normal greens tho.

It's really totally up to you...

at lot of people don't play through the winter as it is can be more difficult and less enjoybale. You can't get out after work, or early at the weekend. There is only normally between 8.30 - 1 as tee off times to get a round in and there is always a good chance that frost will keep courses closed later. Also conditions can be bad meaning that the round is often a battle with the elements rathet the the course. However I've always played through the winter, just not as much as in the summer. Usually get out at least twice a month.

do you mean does play normal greens? obviously the links are the way to go as mostly that don't frost and are always in play. However a lot of the newer course with USGA greens play them all year around too, it is usually the older course that shut certain greens in november for the winter in my experience.

Millicent has good drainage and I believe have their full greens open all through the winter.

During the winter aim to play links courses like corballis.

So far the weather has been great. Even if you cant go out to play try to keep in touch with your game on the range where at least you are sheltered.

    Keep at it

right well I'm on the O'Meara course Wednesday, then the following Friday the Monty (after 2 hours of lessons), then Rathsallagh the following day, St. Annes a week and a half later and then...

I'll prob take Graeme up on his offer of Elm Green some time thereafter (played 9 holes there last week).

Shy of that I'm going to look into a distance membership for next year, get a handicap, and try to make my lessons more frequently. I've never received instruction on anything other than the straight forward swing, so 100 yards in is raw.

I'd like to have a chat with the Pro about a game plan, what goals I should have and how to go about them

Sounds like a good plan keep us informed of your progress and the drills your pro gives you to work on.
Might ask my pro for some short game drills.
