Dead Man's Shoes. Another film I recommend seeing.

Seems that you guys around here have thoroughly enjoyed my previous recommendation, Save The Green Planet some months back, so I thought I might throw another one your way.

Dead Man's Shoes is a very different film entirely, it's a very dark film about revenge, but don't expect something like Oldboy, it's a really gritty and depressing film, but possibly one of the most gripping films I've seen this decade. It's worth seeing for Paddy Considine's preformance alone, he's fantastic in this, and there's some scenes where he's actually quite scary. Brilliantly directed by Shane Meadows, the mood and atmosphere of the film is quite something.

    I cannot recommend it enough.

Yeah, it's an excellent film. I think the lead actors performance eclipses De Niro's performance in Taxi Driver.
Have you seen Tropa de Elite and I'm a Cyborg But That's OK?

I backup this recommendation - really powerful movie. I saw this after having had little sleep, hungover, in a cinema with a group of fu*kwit teens mouthing off and I was still blown away.

Considine should've won awards for his performance here - I'm struggling to remember a delivery as powerful, as full of anger and hatred as when he's in the local and one of the former gang members walks in:

Herbie: Can I help you, mate?
    Richard: [shrugs] Sorry?
Herbie: [says aggressively] What the **** are you looking at?
    Richard: [shouts] You, ya ****!

and yet then counterpoint the way he talks to his brother.

It's a brutal depiction of revenege, and it's ultimately quite a depressing movie, but definitely one to recommend that others see.

No, I've not heard of Tropa de Elite before, just looked it up on imdb, and it seems interesting. I'm A Cyborg But That's Ok is a film I'm really looking forward to, but haven't seen it yet either.

Yeah, I was considering posting a video of that scene, or the scene where he and Sonny talk to each other, but I don't really want to spoil the impact as seen in the context of the film. Considine really does extrude menace when he's face to face with the gang members, and both scenes are fiercely powerful.

I loved Dead Man's Shoes. Really astonishing film. There are so many revenge films around but this is one that really did shock me with it's constant violence and brutality. Like the best revenge films, your moral loyality is constantly questioned (see also Sympathy For Mr Vengance, my other favourite example of the genre). I usually am not a fan of British film but Shane Meadows constantly blows me away

Have you seen any of his other films Karl? This Is England is also excellent, and A Room For Romeo Brass is well worth a watch.

Excellent film. Considine is an awfully underrated actor I find. He does a fantastic job in the film. Toby Kebbell, who plays Anthony, also plays his part very well.

The making of documentary extra on the dvd is well worth a watch too. Quite interesting.

Hmm, for a film that I'm recommending more people see, it seems everyone's already seen it, has anyone here not seen it? :)

Great film but dont watch it if you are feeling down in the dumps. Its very dark and depressing. I would highly reccomend 'This is England' as well.

Ooh ooh, i was the one who put it forward in the boards definitive movie list originally(what happened to that?).
Really really great movie. Me and all my friends were blown away by it. Such a great performance from Considine. There's not really much i can add to what has already been said, just go watch it for yourselves those that haven't... think i might put it forward for film of the week seeing as there is clearly support for it

Thats a disgraceful rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly on IMDB they both have 8.1 and almost the exact same number of votes, I must check out This is England

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Very strange.

Still, it gets my full thumbs up, and I wholeheartedly recommend it, despite what Rottontomatoes has to say on the subject.

Haven't seen this one yet but it was on TV a few weeks back and I have it on the + box. Will try to find the time to watch it over the weekend. Time to watch an ever increasing mountain of films is becoming harder and harder to come by.

Amazing movie possibly the best British movie in the last 10 years.

Just watched this film based on this thread. I found the film engaging from the start, we get the english I can understand exactly why american's didn't like it, since they don't relate to the environment of a small, dull, country town with council housing and the like. The film worked for me because I feel it was a very real portrayal of revenge, full of anger and pain. You can see what considine put into the role.

Just saw this last night. Wow what a film, I couldn't take my eyes off it from beginning to end. The sheer brutality of some of the scenes (especially the scene where
the three guys are off their heads and he slaughters them.
) mesmerised as well as disturbed me. The heart-wrenching ending just topped off, what for me was, a fantastic film.

Also Paddy Considine did a terrific job as the tortured anti-hero. I've only seen him previously in The Bourne Ultimatum and In America and tbh never really took notice of him but from now on I'll make sure to catch any film he's in.

The best fillm I've seen this year. Breathtaking till last minutes. F#### scary!

God will forgive them. God will forgive them and allow them to heaven. I can't live with that.

That quotation scares me every time it pops up on my mind. I hope my ex-girlfriends are not like him!!!

Had to reply as while everybody has seen this nobody seems to have seen This is England. I love Dead Mans Shoes but This is England is the film of the year in 2007 by a country mile imo and everyone should see it. It might not resonate with a younger audience but as I'm an old git I loved every minute of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

Just saw This is England. Very nice, but very predictable.
Dead man's shoes is much better. A little simplier but more surprising. But that's just my opinion.

This Is England has two brilliant central performances from Thomas Turgoose and Stephen Graham. While I agree, it isn't as good as Dead Man's Shoes, it's still a fantastic film. Shane Meadows gets brilliant performances from his actors.

While we're on the subject, here's the 5-minute (!) teaser for 'Le Donk,' Meadows' next feature. Seems to be a mockumentary and teams Meadows up once again with long-time collaborator, Paddy Considine.

Re-watched 'Dead Man's Shoes' tonight as i was absolutely blown away by it on my original viewing but only got around to picking it up on DVD today and it still is an absolutely astonishing film. Definitely the best British film of the last 10 years!

What's even more impressive about Paddy Considine is that alongside his fantastic performance, he co-wrote the film with Meadows.

I really hope Paddy goes far.. he did star in The Bourne Ultimatum and impressed me in that also. The only other film i recall him in is Jim Sheridan's 'In America' which was a wildly over-rated film at the time and can't recall too much about Considine's performance except his character kicking a rapping Des Bishop outta the back of his taxi. I give him credit for that alone i suppose! :D

Oh.. from a quick look on IMDb, i forgot he was in 'Hot Fuzz' and he's hilarious in it too.

Watched 'This Is England' a few months and while very enjoyable, it's definitely a bit on the predictable side but a solid enough script and Meadow's direction is top-notch as usual. What makes both 'This Is England' and 'Dead Man's Shoes' so interesting is the way it somewhat glamourises the evil-doers in both films.

    Another recommendation for this film!
