I only have my 40D a few weeks and i am having problems with the AF at close range approx 3 feet if I move slightly further than that ( 3+) it has no problem focusing. My 20D will focus a lot closer. I have tried it with all my lens and it throws up the same problem with AF at close range
Has anyone else with 40D's problem with AF

    Regards Fireman

What lenses have you got ?
Do any of them fail to focus while they are within their focus range ?

You've might need to move the dioptic wheel a little (beside the viewfinder).
Could be something as simple as that:)

Has no bearing to the AF at all!!

No, of course not, but your eye might percieve what you "see" in the viewfinder as being not sharp

I've a 40D and haven't had any problems focusing. What lens are you using?

There are many lenses that will not focus closer than 3 feet. If it's happening with the 40D it must have been happening with the 20D. Check the minimum focusing distance of your lens and let us know if is supposed to be able to focus below 3 feet.

I thought I had the same problem until I discovered that little dial at the viewfinder. I've had no problems since

I will check the focusing range tomorrow and get back to ye, as I working the night shift tonight!!!!!!

The dioptic wheel wouldn't have anything to do with it as you can feel the lens zooming in and out as it is trying to focus

    I have a 17 / 85 IS USM, 16 / 35 2.8L, and 70 / 200 2.8L

welll 3 feet is on the edge of the 70-200's min focusing distance so thats the prob there on that one.the 16-35 should have no problems focusing at leas than 3 feet... dunno about the other one but I's say it's similar.

it would happen across the entire focus range if this was the case.
