Hmm, I think this would be an interesting thread, seeing as there's quite an interest around these parts.

I've said before that I've kinda tuned out from a lot of more recent ones, but one film that I'm actually eager to see is the Thai film Shutter, as the reviews are good, and it certainly seems to get a good rating. I've seen quite a few Asian horrors that have made me think "Yeah, that was good" but few have really blown me away like Ring and A Tale Of Two Sisters, so I'm hoping Shutter will be as good.

Ive been an asian movie fan for a while and as you said the more recent movies (by and large)are Ringu clones.
You should look for(if you havnt already seen)movies like

    Stacey
    Shoguns Sadism(oxen split torture)
    Run and Kill
    The Ebola Syndrome
    Red Room
    Evil Dead Trap
All Night Long Volumes 1-3(2 is the best but the others are good too.)

Theres loads more I just cant think of at the minute.
Some are awkward enough to find(shoguns sadism especially)but if you persevere with ebay you should get most of the above and reasonably priced too without too much bother.I did anyway.
All are great cat 3 horrors that make a welcome change to the clones.

For the most part, I wouldn't be interested in the cat 3 films at all. I've seen Evil Dead Trap, which was ok at best.

Stacy sends off warning lights for me, I remember seeing Junk, another Japanese zombie flick, and thought it was freaking awful, and Stacy reminds me of that.

To each his own I guess.
Im just sick of creepy kids and haunted houses etc.
Same old crap over and over.
At least the cat 3 ones have a bit of invention to em.(usually)

In fairness, there's a lot more than creepy kids and haunted houses.

Take Uzumaki for example. Vastly different, and not a cliché like creepy kids in sight.

I saw that one A Tale of Two Sisters and it put me right off the whole genre. Thought it was very poor.

    !

I'm shocked and disgusted. A Tale Of Two Sisters is possibly one of the finest horror movies ever made, Asian or otherwise.

Must admit I wasn't mad on A Tale Of 2 Sisters myself - I didn't think it was terrible by any means, it was a very well-made film, but the actual plot was a bit flimsy for my liking. It was coming after too many other
"oh look, the twist is that several characters are in fact one character with with a stretched-beyond-credulity version of Multiple Personality Disorder"
films for me to really take it seriously.

It was beautifully shot though, from what I remember.

Didnt hate ATO2S but I was very non plussed with it.
I just thought it was very predictible and formulaic.
Certainly wouldnt be ar$ed buying it

Jeepers thats going a bit far in my opinion. I don't recall being scared, ill at ease or in the least bit creeped out while watching it. I remember being in Xtravision and renting it because I had seen someone raving about it online, might have been you come to think of it. ;)

Big Asian horror fan myself, happy to have found this thread. :D

Tale of Two Sisters was fantastic. Agree, not very scary but great never the less. Original and proper psychological mind f**k. Pity about the Hollywood remake on the way, unless there's some form of miracle and it does the original justice, it's going to give the movie a bad name. Classic case of: ''haven't seen the original but ...well... I've seen the remake and didn't think it was great...''
Eugh. But definitely, if you're looking to get into Asian horror, check that movie out. One of the highlights of the genre, or sub-genre even.

By KOREn, do you by chance mean Korean? If so, was this monster eating people movie The Host?

Host was quite good but I haven't watched an Asian film in absolute ages and am completely behind with new releases in particular. Mostly, I dislike Asian horror movies, as a keen fan of the Hollywood remakes mainly, simply put, to the superior effects that give me the sort of creeps that I personally enjoy.

That said, I do completely agree that the plots and general everything BAR the effects are of a fairly poor quality in western remakes, but I still enjoy them because they usually do provide good scares, physcological or cheap, which is about as much as I crave from said genre of film. Though I'm still waiting to see the head**** of a movie that's going to really change my attitude towards the genre. :)

I'm going to check a Tale of 2 Sisters out very soon, I've heard great things, but Den's comment gives suspicion that for reasons above, I simply won't enjoy it.

Its people like me that lead directly to the constant churning of remakes...though I have to admit the last few I've seen are seriously degrading in quality, even against the intital poor base set by the Ring and The Grudge, not to mind 'original' ones. The Messengers? Words couldn't do it justice.

Oh and Evil Dead Trap was terrible, absolutely terrible! Is Stacey really any good? Love the sound of it and was looking forward to the cheesy references but can't find it anywhere. I got Bio Zombies recently, and that is pretty shoddy despite some seemingly good reviews.

Wild Zero is another one that's meant to be superb fun, but I suppose it's more ala Braindead then a real horror movie, but still, worth a mention. In that same vein, I'm also waiting on SARS Wars (also known as Bangkok zombie crisis), which is meant to be great. Now I'm really drifting from typical horror towards Action and Comic hybrids, but Versus was quite fun, wasn't it?

please excuse the crap wording and amount of edits in my post, I'm tired, cranky, and typing on a laptop hunched over like a leper so I'm not really very creative/imaginative :(

Indeed, that's something I think we can both agree on for once.

Ignore Havok, he's widely known to have some 'special' tastes in movies.
