    Hi all..
I pulled in a favor and had a guy install two RSJ's to support a second story wall.. I wasn't around when they we installed during the week.. Unfortunitely one will have to be cut back at both ends as it breaches the cavity..

This is the frustrating thing with a self build, its the day your at work that something is done wrong :(

At least this wont take too long to rectify..

Apart fron this I'm happy with progress... here's a recent snap..

    Cheers..

    Hi bbam,

In technical terminology, I suppose you could call it ...a bridge too far,;);)

Are they resting on the blocks only?

    Your padstones should be 450mm

Resting a beam on ordinary concrete blockwork creates a pressure point that the blockwork may not be able to take. Concrete blocks can easily be broken with hand tools - imagine what a few tonnes can do. The trick is to cast a piece of concrete into the wall.

What Victor said and in order to spread the pin-point loading uniformly across the blockwork the padstone should be a min of 450 mm long and be at right angles (where possible) to the RSJ.

Think of it like the man on the bed of nails. If he lies on 1 or 2 nails they will pierce his body because of the sheer amount of weight at 1 or 2 points. But if he spreads the weight of his body over a large number of nails then there is less pressure on each nail.

we would of also accepted a bed of eggs muffler.

Insitu concrete is probably easiest, but you can also probably buy a suitable precast piece.
