When ever i go to shut down the computer, it stalls and says programs still running , then the box comes up which offers you the chance to close the program immediately or wait 30 seconds for the computer to close it.
It doesnt matter what I select here, it just stalls.

The only way I can turn off the computer is by hitting the restart key and then the power button

    What is wrong?

Which program is causing it to stall? Are they different each time you are trying to close?

Try this, I had a very similar problem & it worked for me.

It's from the Microsoft website, it's called "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service"

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that , but my OS is Window 98 and i think the above only works on Windows XP.

I think its only one program which is preventing it from shutting down properly? I think it might be MS Word- but I will have to check again to be sure.

You probably should have mentioned earlier that its a win 98 machine, lol. They are pretty different.

You'll have to post the program causing the problem if you can see the name of it. I doubt its Ms word unless you have this open or have just closed it when shutting down as it wouldn't be running the background otherwise.

I have a similar problem with my DELL Inspiron Laptop. I'm using Windows XP and recently have had problems shutting it down. I have two problems and I think that they are connected. The first is that Internet Explorer won't open for ages, I click on both the shrotcut on my desktop and on the link in the program list and it won't open first time, it does eventually open but it takes an number of attempts.

Secondly, when I try and shut down the laptop a box opens saying that IEXPLORER has to shut down, it starts to shut it down but then it stops near the end of the process. Everytime I try to shutdown the computer this happens. The only way of turning it off is to keep the power button held down, which I know is not good for the computer.

    Any help would be appreciated.:o

    Can be caused by:
    Graphics Driver helper applications
Security setting that wipes page files (really slow)
    Sound card helper applications
    Trojans/Viruses.
    Acrobat Reader.
    Internet Explorer.
Roaming profile on bad or no network connection.

    @Punchesnpeaches
I use IE for MS Updates and Firefox for everything else.
On XP you can open TaskManager and kill an evil program (not all though).
There is a UNIX style kill -9 free program for NT4/Win2000/XP that will on command line kill programs that task manager won't, such as failed tape backup.
