I have just bought a Belkin N Mimo Wireless router & USB adapter. It is for a group of us in two houses next door to each other. The eircom modem is on my pc and my question is - can everyone else who is on the network gain access to my pc files etc???
Perhaps a stupid question but thanks in advance for any help.:)

If your wifi is unencrypted they can easily packet sniff and perhaps get details from your communications to later access your rig. Just depends how bad someone wants to crack you.

Packet sniffing aside, the only way people who are legitimately on your network (i.e. you and your neighbour) can access your files is if you specifically set up file sharing on your computer. If you're running Vista just go into the Network and Sharing Center and you can turn on/off file sharing as well as other things. On XP I think it's a bit more complicated but as far as I know you have to set up the folders you want to share manually and they'll have a little hand at the corner of their icon if they're being shared. If you don't want to share anything in the first place just select the network as a public network and it will turn off file sharing by default.

Lads got a Belkin router the other day in Maplins - I'm using Eircom DSL but have it a couple of years so no wireless - thought I'd rectify that. Eventually got it working on the PC and fired up the lap top anf its working wirelessly too- well thats what I thought. Its working for 3 mins or so then dropping, I've checked the time out setting on the router and its now set for 15 mins. The Eircom modem was connected using a USB while this has to be connected with a yellow cable(eithernet??). I've set a password and the laptop accepted that.

When the connection drops I get a message flashing up in the bottom right that "network cable is not connected" - but it is and the connections are good as I have steady indicator lights on the modem itself.

Not sure what else to do lads at the end of my tether - can anyone help, much obliged.
