    Hi all,

I'm not entirely sure if this can be of any benefit to me but was in a friends apartment which he had recently moved into & he said there was an old dish & sky+ box lying around.

Decided i'd take it home & try to set it up as I've currently no subscription service at home. There's a card in the box but I assume the subscription has been canceled.

So what I want to know is, is this box and dish of any use or if I want channels do i need to ring up sky & subscribe as normal? Ideally I would like the basic package with sky+ and sports.

Thanks for your help in advance

Ok, there are two parts to this answer, assuming that the dish and box are in perfect working order.

The dish and box are wholly usable for FTA channels, i.e. All channels that are freely broadcast on satellite and you don't need to subscribe to. These include all the BBC and ITV channels, but not Irish TV or Channel 4. You will not be able to use the Sky+ record functions, as you need a subscription to Sky (effectively) for this to work.

You would need a new subscription card, as the old card you have belongs to Sky and the old subscriber. So, once you have set up all the bits and get a signal, you can contact Sky, sign up for the package you want and await your card in the post. There is a postal strike in the UK which may hamper delivery. Ring Sky once you have the card, so they can pair the box to the card.

BTW, if you got them for nothing, you did well....
