I wonder how many threads like this I have to post before Chris puts me on commission?

I bought a guitar from Chris and used email. No problem at all. Not much delay really. Just let him know you're interested in buying in the subject of the email

Looks exactly like my first guitar, a '63 (as near as Gibson could figure out) ES125.
I wasn't very impressed with it, but I was young then.

    it's hideous

i'm trying to think of something right with its appearance, but i can't

it's completely over the top in every way. just screams stupid old guy with too much money **** to 12 bar pentatonics in a bar. the old guys at the fdp would love that guitar.

i like my guitars fairly clean and minimalist. and if they look even slightly metally, then they can piss right off :D

In my day, you were **** if you were playing anything other than simple pentatonics and 12 bar blues.

The skill level has come down now to include that too eh?

Kids these days... what next, 'OMG, look at that guy **** with all those chords, that's so lame, open E string is enough for me! 11! 1!

You're one of those guys who thinks every guitar has to have a flat finish, single coils and a 2 point trem, and anything else is just something to be poked fun at, aren't you?

It's funny how you only find that in the guitar world...

You don't hear guys boasting about their black & white TVs or clapped out '84 Fiat Pandas as though they're onto a winner and everybody else is a 'snob' or 'rich old guy with too much money'...:D

Metallic paint? Sure that's only for poseurs, I painted my car with a bucket of Dulux, clean & minimalist ftw! 1! 11!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭Rustar

Just remember, guys, that deaddonkeys also have deadbrains. :D

Those first two are almost an exact copy of my main guitars....a strat and an amber flame-maple Schecter.

    I take umbrage!

Edit: AND I'm a stupid old guy who's played bars and likes to **** pentatonic 12-bar blues!

You find a lot of wierd crap in the guitar world. Even other instruments you don't find similar opinions.

Like recently, on another message board some guy was deriding me because I played the 7 string, saying how 'Real guitarists' don't need 7 strings and how you can do anything you can on 7 with a 6 string. On the flipside to that, I doubt anyone has ever heard a keyboard player saying that real keyboard players don't need 88 keys, or that you can do anything you can do on 88 key with a 61 key. I'd be freakin' stupid.

Closer to home even, bassist don't get that kind of rubbish either, nobody even looks twice at a 5 string, and a lot of bassists have really embraced the idea of extended range, with a lot of 6+ stringed basses available. Nobody says "Just downtune your bass" or that a 6 string is pointless.

I suppose you have to consider that Guitar is the most popular instrument, so that probably has the most crazies out of all. ;)

lol i just downtune but thats purely an asthetic thing for me...i just dont like the way 5,6+ string basses look.:o

dont get me wrong, i enjoy seeing endangered tropical hardwood trees felled as much as the next man...but to use them to build that bass is a tragic waste. its fugly.

Meh, it's not something I'd ever play, but I do appreciate it. It's cool in it's own kinda way.

I don't like that particular bass but I would like to get an ERB eventually.

For those not in the know, ERB stands for Extended Range Bass. :)

Aye, there was an Extended Range Guitar forum and website around a few years back, but that closed down.

    hot!
    guitars shouldn't be overly flashy

i'm not too keen on 2 point trems, it's a bit much for me ;)
regular old bigsby and p90s is what real men play ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

Now I love P90's and Bigsby's but damn! those are fugly as hell!

I think I'll hold onto those pics, just incase I ever need to think unsexy thoughts. :p

everyone except me seems to hate them

i think they're pretty much the sexiest guitars i've ever seen. so off the wall, and yet so pretty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Ah, they're not that bad tbh. I think the worst aspect is the headstock, it looks like a piece of wood that's been involved in a gardening accident. Can't believe anyone would design it like that on purpose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

Well, Deaddonkey, if that's the kind of thing you like (:rolleyes:) then you might enjoy this.

And yes I did first see a link to that website on another guitar forum and if that's a problem for anyone then

Eh, I dunno about that. I've read a few six string debates in my time. Five string basses are probably left alone because five string double basses go way back. It's as much a "real" instrument as a four string bass.

Baritone guitars existed long before the seven string arrived to do a more loosely designed job of mostly the same thing. They'd probably get less attacks if they were used appropriately more often tbh. I'm all for ridiculously over-stringed guitars (as long as people stop calling them basses for no good reason) but the rest of the arrangement is kinda crucial when it comes to the register of the instrument.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble of misinformation but it is actually a bass, as mentioned above these types of basses are referred to Extended Range Basses. I have heard some great songs on these, and also know a few players (from another forum) who play these. Its not all about playing the f**king mario theme tune. Some of the stuff they play could easily stand alone by itself without any other instruments. These guys are professional musicians...I.E. they earn a living from playing bass.

Seven string guitars have been around for about 150 years! Used in classical and flamenco guitar styles. They were also adopted by Jazz guitarists in the '30s. So theyre around a lot longer than you think. Baritones are around a long time also, since the '50s.

    :)
