We stayed in this hotel in July

It was quite central, we walked everywhere. Also the hotel itself was fantastic.

Thanks, just checked out this hotel, but more expensive than i wanted to pay. In February / March 2008 they are currently quoting €254 per night / or €762 for 3 nights!

Yes, I checked the site and liked the sound of the hotel, but quite taken aback at that price. Mind you almost everything I look at in Madrid seems expensive. We were in Portugal a few weeks ago, and 2 of us got 6 days b & B in 3 star hotel for €174 for the two of us. At the moment I cant find anything in Madrid for much less than €100 a night room only.

It must just be the luck of the draw with when you book I couldn't find any reasonably priced hotel in Lisbon at all!

How about an apartment? Stayed here and liked it http://www.atprincipe11.com/index.html. It might be wise to ask for an apartment facing away from the street. You can read about my trip at www.iol.ie/~draoi .

I go to Madrid a fair bit and second last time stayed in a nice place on C/Acala called Hotel Regina, (100 m from Sol) and that was €165 per night per double room and I was there at weekend just gone and stayed on C/ de La Cruz called Tijcal ll and that was a hostal type place . It was very clean, very secure and great location. It was €76 for double room.
    Brilliant city!

Forgot to say, if you are going with your wife that the "second sales" are on in the shops at that time and you can get clothes etc for next to nothing. My wifes birthday is at that time and she always wants to go there for it so she can take advantage of the bargains.

If you were brave enough not to book until you arrive you might get great value in the Hotel Regina. We booked a double room on Gran Via. It was so disgusting that we refused to stay but only after the owner extorted €75 one nights stay, we needed our passports back!. Anyhow chanced my arm in Regina and amasingly offered three nights double room €190 total. Enjoy this fab city

Stayed in the Maria Elena Palace this year, varies from €90 - 130 depending on the day. 5 Mins from the Sol very quiet street, fab hotel, huge room, spotless everywhere, great service, great staff, collection and delivery from the Airport but that will not be necessary as the public transport stops in the SOL. Hotel would be a little above what I would normally pay but this was an exception and I was delighted I booked it. Hope you enjoy wherever you stay, lots to see, city centre very compact, dont miss the soccer stadium if you like soccer or the palace and the gardens

Or the art museums. Although, avoid Sundays because it's free in on those days and they become very crowded. The Velasquez and Goya paintings in the Prado are magnificent.

If you're on a budget then you could try Hostal Persal - www.hostalpersal.com/ - not luxurious but perfectly clean and comfortable. It's in a great area - Plaza Santa Ana - which has some brilliant bars, and within easy walking distance of Sol and of the Prado. It can get a bit noisy at night so ask for rooms at the back.

    Eat lots of tapas!

We stayed in the Husa Paseo del Arte near Atocha train station this summers. It's close to the nightlife region of town as well as being near the three famous art galleries. Excellent hotel and we got it for great value in the summer by booking through www.roomexhotels.com

i would definitely recommend madrid. i was there this summer and had a ball. it is not the cheapest place but sure it is somewhat cheaper than ireland for some things.
we stayed in hostel ticjal 1. it only cost about e52 per night and literally you could not get a place more central. it is definitely the most central place that i have ever stayed in. i would really recommend the place. it is cheap, central and nice. alright it is only two stars, it could easily be there but at the end of the day all that i wanted the place was to sleep(and maybe other activites that i wont mention). it is ideal. check it out.
i would also go to the real madrid stadium and do the tour of it. the bus tour is fairly cheap and you get to see all the sights. the prada museum is also worth checking out even if you are not that much into art.
    enjoy
