I read an article in the sunday times homes supplement about a year an half ago that extention were exempt up to 40sqm to the rear and 25sqm to the side, however I have been unable to find any confirmation on the the 25sqm to the side in the planning leaflets or from any architects I know except when converting a garage. Can anyone help me with this. I have the article squirreled away and can't find it at the mo but I am 100% positive that it says this.
    Thanks

As you say an attached garage up to 25m2 can be converted into habitable accommodation and a detached garage can be built up to the same size to the side providing it is behind the front building line of the house (subject to certain conditions). Apart from that I am not aware of any other exempted development to the side of a house.

Have a look at leaflet no. PL5 here

thanks, will do. I guess this means if you want to extend to the side you have to build a garage first!

No. You apply for planning permission. ;)
