Connecting to College Network

I probably should have posted this in a tech thread, but I figured other tcd students will have gone through this already...

I got a laptop last xmas with windows media centre edition and then discovered that i wasnt allowed connect to the college wireless network, I had no intention of spending the money to get xp pro so I just accepted it!

The other day I got an email from the cs department letting me know that I'm eligible for the MSDN Academic Alliance Program from Microsoft so I was able to download an ISO image of xp pro service pack 2 for FREE!

So... how do I go about changing my OS? I suppose I'll have to burn the ISO to a CD and use the CD to install? Will my harddrive be wiped if I just go ahead now and try to install it? Therefore, will I need to back it up somehow onto DVDs?

    Thanks in advance,
    DM

I don't get it, can we get any MS products free?

    How does THAT work?

Make sure you back up all important data before you attempt the upgrade but you should be able to upgrade your OS and keep the files in tact.

The Computer Science Dept. has a deal with MS that allows students access to the MSDN AA - which means all IT related products, and student related products, are free to download the ISO. you should have recieved an email about it.

I upgraded from XP home to XP pro and it went fine. However, back up any important files first.

You just bang in the disc, hit go and come back in an hour.

I got that email the other day but didn't look at it till now. Me thinks I'll be having Vista for free :) Is Office on there? I could only see bits of it.

Nah office isn't, as office doesnt fall under tha areas that they feel necessary for CS. weird that one note is though :P

edit: oh, if anyone wants a free 60 day trial of office 2007 at any point, gimme a shout - i got a few up in the DUCSS room.

one note.. handy. now to figure out what an iso image is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

From my limited understanding of installation disks you can just burn an .iso file onto a dvd/cd and use it as an installation disk.

Or use software that will mount it for you (Alcohol 120% is one that comes to mind).

again from my non-technical view point, an iso is a disk image. this is like a snapshot of what should be on the disk (cd for example). so when u "burn" an "iso" onto a cd you take everything that should be on that cd and put it on it. so instead of a list of files coming up when you look at the cd you have a cd that's made to boot and do other mad stuff. that's actually a bad explanation.

a windows/os iso is burned to a cd so that when you put the cd in the computer it knows it's a operating system cd (windows cd) and not just a cd with a bunch of files on it.

an ISO essentially is a single file that contains all the files that it would include in for instance, a straight download, PLUS filesystem metadata - for instance boot code etc.

So how do I use it?

Sweet, so does this mean that the copies of XP Pro and Office 2003 I "acquired" a few months ago are now 100% legit?

Not unless you re download xp PRO and reinstall, and also go find a legit copy of office.

    so, long story short, NO.

Ah, I see Office isn't covered under this program.

Well, next time I feel like reinstalling XP I'll do it the legit way I guess.

Its a pretty good deal thay have goin there... fair play to CS Dept.

So... would u recommend doin one of them system recovery discs... or just burn any important files (basically a **** load of mp3s!) to dvds...

and jus to make sure... it doesnt specify that its an upgrade disc... would that make any difference?

Anyone going to the laptop clinics over the next few days be warned:

I spent 2 and a half hours waiting for mine to be sorted today and there were many still waiting after I was finished.
