Anyone have any ideas as the best option for getting wireless internet for a construction company in a remote site / region?
    What options are out there?

There is a lot to answer here. Basically how far away is the nearest point that has broadband? Wireless links are capable of linking over distances of up to 20km to 30km with a good line of sight. If the distance is greater that this you will require 2 or more wireless hops.
Typically you would expect to pay about 400 euros for the wireless equipment per hop.
There are many different technologhies that you can use. Here are a few names Mikrotik, starOS, redline and there are many more.
Your fisrt task would be to find a point on the building site that can seen a point that is broadband enabled or find a path of points with line of sight to the nearest broadband enabled area.
Then you need to get someone in that area to allow you to share their connection.
Remember that each location that you intent to put wireless equipment will have to have power, not a lot but a supply all the same.
PM me am I will send you a link to online stores for equipment.

Yes 3G is rubbish once you leave populated area. If just drops down to gprs, you might as well have dialup :(
