    Folks,

Some advice needed on setting up a wireless network,

I currently have my PC connected via ethernet cable to my Irish broadband ripwave modem. I have a belkin WIFI usb dongle connected and working on this pc.

I also have an iqon notebook with a belkin WIFI pcmcia card which I want to connect to my PC in order to share the internet connection and file sharing etc.

So far so good in that I have them connected and the internet connection shared but it keeps dropping the connection (nothing to do with range). Also the notebook picks up the pc when exploring the network but the pc wont pick up the notebook. If I ping the pc from the notebook I get 0% loss but from pc TO the notebook i get 100% loss !!

Any ideas i.e. third party software to make this easy ? I used the windows wireless netowrk setup wizard but it was useless.

    Many thanks

    Karl

    What firewalls are you using?

if you are using zonealarm on the pc you have to turn it off in order to get internet working on the laptop. i tried setting up a rule to allow all traffic from the 192.168.x.x. subnet, but it still won't work for me.

We set up a poor Windows XP machine with no firewall or anti-virus software.

Connecting it to the internet would be like throwing it into a lion pen with raw meat strapped to its hard drive.

How long would it be before we were hit by something nasty on the net? Hours, minutes?

As it turned out - eight seconds!

So do NOT turn off the firewall. Third party firewalls have the extremely nasty habit of turning off the windows firewall and may not turn it back on if uninstalled or disabled

IIRC there should be a sticky about sharing.

Check the IP of your computer - if it's 192.168.??.?? then you can share files to the local subnet. If it's not 192.168 then you are connected to the internet and are sharing to it.

In the windows XP firewall you are looking at exceptions in the firewall.
In zonealarm you are looking at trusted hosts / trusted IPs to share to.

Used network magic but it's not up to much for wireless networks - so we are just sticking with the status quo for the moment - the dropping signal thing seems to have ironed itself out and I got encryption on the connection - and in time too as my norton was going mad telling me it had foiled intrusion attempt after attempt.

On a different note I got NTL broadband in 3 days ago. 2mb and it flies along untill tonight when the modem stopped registering with the network so i had to plug in the ripwave just to put up this post !!

Out of the frying pan and into the fire !
