    Main news story here.

"The main pollutants recorded in 2006 were nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter (PM10)."

    From the report:

"NOx includes the two pollutants nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Power-generation plants and motor vehicles are the principal sources of NOx,"

[Diesel engines can produce 24 times more NOx than petrol. (source)]

"The main sources of PM10 are the combustion of solid fuels and road traffic, in particular emissions from diesel engines."

I suppose everyone was too busy looking for apartments in Bulgaria when yer man posted this. Strange that at a certain moment a few years ago lots of anti-Diesel hate started being drummed up out of nowhere. Despite particulate matter pollution consistently falling since the 90's

Is it just that the anti-Diesel crowd have deep pockets?

    First line of the article
Small towns have a lower standard of air quality compared with the rest of Ireland because smokeless fuels are not in use

I think there’s just more awareness nowadays. Things like the emissions scandal will have opened up the eyes of politicians and policy makers, who tend to latch onto things and push forwards. Back when the Greens were incentivizing diesel purchases, they were believing the tripe coming out of the manufacturers in relation to emissions. More people are just aware now that diesel tech is a filthy, dirty way to burn fuel, no matter how many piss injectors that are bolted on. It should be back where it belongs in trucks, tractors, and ships. Having the likes of small VW’s driving around with Diesel engines in them is nothing short of a bad joke.

It's amazing how important things like this are always missed!

I bought myself a new set of lights recently, and since then, it's been raining alot more than the weeks previously. I think we should ban purchased of new lights, just in case!

But it wasn't just "The Greens". All across Europe the lobbying power of motor manufacturers, and their lies, succeeded in influencing the EU and national governments.
I watched a former Chief Scientific Officer of the UK on BBC saying that they were duped by the promises made by motor manufacturers re clean diesel.

I use the Greens as an example of a political party being duped by fraudulent figures, of course I’m not blaming the greens for the entire scandal.

I accept that but you choose to primarily target the Greens for criticism.
I'm pointing out that political parties of all hues across Europe were duped by "clean diesel" - and followed recommendations by scientific advisors.

    As an aside:
Sometime after the emissions scandal the EU voted to allow motor manufacturers to exceed emissions standards by a wide margin (until 2020 AFAIR). The Nederlands was the only country to vote against the proposal. This shows the power of the motor industry lobbying.
And they're lobbying actively to have future emissions standards watered-down.
