Smokes

I was talking to a friend the other day who said that he was thinking of getting a box of smoke grenades from an airsoft shop up north since he's gonna be there anyway. Now I was under the impression that smokes came under the umbrella of fireworks and, therefore, explosives. He's usually well up to speed on these things and he argued with me for about 10 minutes that they're legal here.

I'm a bit scooby-dubious about this I have to say, so I was wondering if any of you fine, upstanding gentlemen (or ladies, you never know who's viewing and not posting) are crystal on the laws regarding this as I'd like a definite black and white answer. I've seen them being used in paintball facilities before which is why I'm doubting my own theory as well as his.

What type of smokes are they, there a a few diferant types and that would influence things. One thing to watch military smokes are available in the UK (not sure about the north) and are very dangerous if you dont treat them with respect.

He's picking them up, not me. I warned him away from flashbangs and the like and he seemed to get that but I don't think he knows himself what type he's purchasing. I was unaware there were different grades that effected the legality beyond military grade which I'm reasonably certain are illegal here due the amount of charge in them. However, again, I could be mistaken.

Dont think you can buy flash-bangs to easily, thunder flashes are available. There's 2 types of those, one for indoors and one for outdoors with different charges. There effectivly fireworks.

Smokes im not 100% on TBH. But im consulting a higher power on it ATM ;) I know how dangerous the mil ones can be and I could see an accident hapen very easily with them so I always mention the dangers when the topic of smoke comes up here in case somone does lay their hands on some.

BTW if your caught bringing fireworks over the border customs can confiscate your car.

Again, I told him this but he's not a man who changes his mind easily. Hence why I'm looking for concrete on the smokes question. When I said flashbang I meant thunderflash (I know there's a difference but I use the term flashbang as a generic), he's not going to attempt those as he's aware they're illegal.

It should be defined in Explosives Act, 1875 but I cannt find it. Pyrotechnics are covered as well (a firework is a pyrotechnic).

I doubt the smokes grenade type they selll in predator would go down too well with the gardai.
Although i do remember being able to buy smoke bombs that you had to use a lighter with a few years ago in a joke shop and they are nearly the same only difference is u have to use a lighter not a match type striker on the top.

Probably best not to have police know about them or better yet not get them just to be on the safeside.

Paul would probably know more about it then myself and most people on boards for that matter.

Possibly a grey area? Although i would say if u were caught using them in an unmannerly fashion you would be prosecuted as if they were fireworks or otherwise.

You might want to check the rules of the venue you are going to use them at first too.
    Just an idea.....

I'd love to get some somke grenades. And some inert Dummy Grenades
for just the pure look but have always been afraid to order them.
(Of course if there is an online or walk in store in Ireland then I will
    order or buy em)

Maybe a place like HRTA could get a permit for the likes of some of the
other pyrotechnics commonly used in the UK so they could be used
on site but not sold to anyone that wants to take them away off site.

Dont know about the smoke bombs/nades legal stand point in Ireland
but the Round smoke bombs you used to buy in the Joke shops have
not been sold in years! I have been scouring Ireland in the hopes of finding some
cos I was guessing the Smoke Grenades I used in the FCA were not legal to
possess and was looking for a legal alternative.

the ones from the joke shop are nowhere near as good as the ones you buy at predator up the north, they dont burn as long or produce as much smoke

i got some in the joke shop beside stephen's green (dublin) a few months back, even made a metal holder to hold 3/4 of them and used it at hrta, it was rather anti-climactic (sp?)

The problem is that there's nothing set in stone against them. I'd prefer he errored on the side of caution and didn't chance it but he can't be told.

explosives, pyrotechnic's, fireworks, are defined by a UN NUMBER, so if it reads
un 1. what ever number 1. is clased as explosives and you need a import permit from the DOJ.
pyrotechnic's are legal to have and use in ireland, but this is the funny bit of the law it is illegal to import them in to ireland with out a import permit.

Ahhhh, ok. That makes a bit more sense now. I'm assuming these permits aren't easy to obtain or everyone and their mother would be getting one. I'm also assuming that smokes of any type do still count as pyrotechnics?

    Lethal:
the particular substances you've mentioned are infact illegal to import without a licence/due cause in ireland, you've been around here long enough to know this, the topic has come up before, consider this a warning, one more and you'll be banned for a week

Thanks to those that reported that post by the way, just to let you know the report button does work! :)

actually, before this thread starts to get any worse, im gonna lock it

this issue has been raised before

YES, the joke shop sells smoke pellets, these are the legal type, NO they are not very good, there is also a type which is used for checking leaks in chimneys and such and are also legal

NO, you cannot buy/sell/use/own smoke grenades of the sort which are legal in NI and used at many airsoft sites in the UK, unforunate but true

from now on, anyone who posts any ingredients or instructions on how to make home made smoke grenades or any pyro's will be banned for one week, no warnings
